Little Run Farm

9/18/99 at Williamstown WV

by Kim Nutter

(Williamstown, WV) Sep 18, 1999- The 2d Annual Little Run Farm Cross Country extravaganza was a fan's delight. Over 500 runners, from junior high schools and high schools all over the state of West Virginia and Ohio, converged on the grounds of the Walker Machinery complex to take part in West Virginia's largest high school cross country meet. The meet gave many of the runners an early opportunity to test their mettle over the same course that will be used to stage this years state championship on October 30. It was a perfect day for racing and the fans that turned out were treated to some highly competitive racing on both the boys and girl's sides. Race Director Dorsey Cheuvront did a spectacular job in laying out a rolling, fan friendly course.

The AAA Girls got things off to a fast start with West Virginia's premier female high school runner, Holly Hunter of East Fairmont, winning comfortably over the Davis sisters, Susan and Jennifer, of Hampshire County. Susan Davis kept it close for awhile, but Hunter's strength prevailed and she won going away, in 18:35 to Davis' 18:41.2. Jennifer Davis finished third in 18:55.3. In the team race Fairmont Senior showed why it's ranked as the number one Girls AAA team by easily outdistancing runner up Marietta, OH 77-93. East Fairmont was a distant third with 149 points.

The AAA Boys race was the most exciting of the day. Larry Adkins of Huntington High stamped himself as the early favorite to win the WV state championship with a stirring finish to outlast up and coming Kenny Beerbower of Clarksburg's Robert C Byrd High, 16:42.4 to 16:43.7. Adkins led for much of the race, but Beerbower was able to catch him in the third mile. Adkins was able to find another gear and thwarted Beerbower's upset attempt. Denny Hayes of AA-A Doddridge County, finished a close third to Beerbower in 16:45. In a match up of the two top rated boys teams in the state, Fairmont Senior used their superior depth to knock off AA-A Doddridge County 81-111. Led by Randy Melarejo's 4th place (16:50), the Polar Bears placed 3 runners in the top ten.

The AA-A Boys race was a showcase for hometown runner Ryan Parsons of Williamstown. Running on his home course in front of the Williamstown crowd, Parsons pulled off a mild upset, easily turning back runner up Dusty Dent of Gilmer County, 16:45-17:06. Williamstown's pack running enabled the Yellow Jackets to hold off Little Kanawha Conference rival Ritchie County 88-93. It should be noted however that AA-A Doddridge County competed in the AAA section of the race, finishing 2d and barring injuries, look solid to capture the AA-A title.

The AA-A Girls race featured a spirited duel between Jessica Taylor of Fayetteville and Sophomore Sherri Flohr of Grafton High. Taylor's experience and race savvy prevailed as she held off Flohr 19:54-19:56. This race will make for a much anticipated rematch on Oct 30 at the state championship. Taylor spent most of the summer competing in various road races around West Virginia and may be feeling the effects of too much racing. Flohr's Grafton teammates supported her well as the tightly bunched Bearcats squeeked out a 1 point win over Liberty Union (OH) 80-81, with Doddridge a close third with 85 points.
