Cross Country 1999

West Virginia report

10/6/99

by Kim Nutter

The cross country season in the Mountain State keeps rolling along and it’s at this point of the season that teams and individuals establish themselves as contenders for the state championships, to be staged in Williamstown on October 30. Charleston Catholic took care of business in the PikeView Invitational, outdistancing Cabell Midland 31-52. Jessica Taylor remained unbeaten with an easy 21:21 win over Catholic’s Annie Schuerger  and Ashley Warren (both timed in 22:48). Taylor will most likely remain unchallenged until the state meet, as she remains the clear cut favorite in the A-AA Girls race. The boys race saw Capital outdueling George Washington 50-72 and Jonathan Calhoun of Oak Hill winning comfortably over Aaron Phillips of host PikeView, 18:15-18:27.

The Preston Invitational in Kingwood saw some real competitve running on both the girls and boys sides. The Grafton Bearcat girls kept in their winning groove by beating Doddridge County 45-60, thanks to solid team running. Giti Farudi of University High has been running exceptionally well so far this season and should make an impact at the state meet. Farudi triumphed over Grafton’s Sherri Flohr 19:48-20:08. Doddridge County’s Denny hayes has also been having a superb overland season and reckons to be a contender, along with his Bulldog teammates at the A-AA meet. Hayes ran a good 16:58 to win going away over Keith Rand of Morgantown. The Mohigan boys won the meet with 35 points. Preston was a surprise second over a tough bunch from Doddridge 49-52.
