Cross Country 1999

Greater Spokane League

10/19/99

from Dustin Stum

At Whitworth College – 3 mile course primarily flat, some sand, with a difficult 80 meter uphill finish, weather sunny and in mid 60’s.

Greater Spokane League champion Mead High showed it’s depth by placing seven runners in the top ten finishers. Michael Kiter, Shadle Park High, demonstrated why he is considered a favorite to win the state 4A title this year as he finished 28 seconds ahead of Mead’s Chris Fayant. Kiter’s only losses this year are to Flathead’s David Vidal at the Mountain West Invite and to University’s Max Schmidt at the Sunfair Invite.

At Audubon Park – 3 mile course, grass and rolling hills, weather was sunny and in mid 60’s.

The interest at Audubon focused on the battle between Ferris’ Andrew Ice, a preseason favorite to win state 4A and University’s Max Schmidt, winner of the elite flight at the Sunfair Invite. Schmidt was coming off of a week of idleness due to a foot injury and was unable to stay with Ice, who pulled away with 600 meters left in the race. University solidified it’s number 9 national ranking as it placed 7 runners in the top 15 finishers.
