With 1930 runners representing 80 schools, the 9th annual Woods Trail Run
saw its largest field in the history of the event. Director Dan Grossman
had his results on the web almost instantly as the wizard of race management
saw almost 2,000 high school runners hit the finish line Saturday. The
weather (60/65 degrees and partly sunny) was optimal, and the reputation of
the event and the course (the coming out site for Erin Sullivan 2 years ago)
has become a bigger draw every fall as witnessed by this years record number
of teams and athletes.
Vermont faired well, over some of New England's finest programs. Harwood
Union (Duxbury,VT) won the boys race as coach John Kerigan's top 4 were
supported by a strong effort by numbers 5-7 who had to fight their way up
through the large field to secure the victory. Harwood was led by Bruce
Hyde who finished 5th, 33 seconds behind overall winner Brian McGovern of
Farifield (CT) 16:30 Colin Ingram of Winnacunnet (NH) was second in 16:49, then three Vermonters:
Mint Henk, Randolph (VT) 16:54 Mike Audette, Rutland (VT) 16:58 and Hyde at
17:03
In the girls race, Danville (VT) freshman Lauren Bertolini continued her
successful introduction to New England high school cross-country by topping
the field with a time of 19:11. Mt Mansfield (VT) was the top Vermont squad
as the Cougars, minus the departed Sullivan (Stanford) finished second by
only 6 points to girls team champs Nashua (NH) 164 points. Vermonters in
the top 10 included Lea Davison of Mt Mansfield, 4th in 19:58 and Kelly
Chaplin of U-32, 6th in 20:06.
The Vermont schools will return to the Woods Trail course at the end of
October for the Vermont State Championships.

Here are some Connecticut Boys results from the 1999 Thetford Invitational held Saturday October 2.
Junior Brian McGovern from Fairfield Prep, got out quickly avoiding an early race pile up, and led to the finish running the somewhat muddy 5000 meter course in 16:30. 54 Teams scored and 691 individuals finished the race.
