Cross Country 1999

Utah Track and Field News Letter

11/1/99

from Roger Buhrley, UHSAA

The annual meeting will be held December 10th from 6:00 until 8:00 at American
Fork High School cafeteria (510 N 600 E). Park's Sportsman and Stackhouse will provide the meal.

Questions? Complaints? Want something on the agenda? Contact Shane Quilling or Alan Hansen.

SURVEY'S / DUES- If you haven't paid dues, get them to Doyle Holt at Kearns High ASAP. If you haven't
completed the track/cross country survey, return it to Alan Hansen at Fremont High immediately.

XC COURSE CHANGE?- The UHSAA is considering changing the site of the State Cross Country
Championships. There were several problems with the meet this year: cars parked in the way, athletes being paced, athletes being tripped and hampered by the crowd, etc.  Sugarhouse Park has always been a little tough for crowd control, and isn't the most "spectator friendly" course for those of us too old to hoof it. There have been no definite plans made as yet, and coaches should make their views known to their athletic directors, principals, UHSAA, etc.

At this time, they are considering running the meet at BYU.  If you know of acceptable alternatives, let the proper people know. Some that have been brought up: Cottonwood Complex, Rose Park Golf Course, Logan Golf Course, moving the meet to St. George, rotating sites, etc.

PRE-FOOTLOCKER MEET- East High will host a tune-up meet for Foot Locker November 23rd at Cottonwood Complex. The Girls will run at 3:00, Boys at 3:30. Contact Dale Stagg or Ben Stowell for information.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
On a beautiful October day (much too early for a State
Championship meet), 987 runners crossed the finish line to
culminate the 1999 Utah Cross Country season. Evan,
Dave, Jerry and the entire UHSAA staff did their usual
outstanding job of putting on a class event. For complete
results, go to Doug Padilla's web site at
www.runnercard.com.
The meet saw the top-ranked teams in the nation
(Mountain View boys and Bingham girls) trying to solidify
their lofty positions, while the state as a whole tried to show
they can compete with anyone. Is there a stronger state (per
capita) in the nation? I doubt it!!! After their third place
finish at the Great American, and second place finish in
Boys 5A, Bingham showed they are definitely worthy of a
top-25 ranking, as are Orem and Provo. As is the case
with the boys, it seems there should be more than one Utah
girls team ranked at the end of the season, with Mountain
View, Davis, Mountain Crest and others having some
legitimate claims.
On an individual basis, Josh Rohatinsky and Laura
Zeigle showed why there will be so many eyes on them in
December. With many outstanding runners in the state,
they still dominated their races (and the entire season) as
few have ever done. It will be interesting to see if some
others from Utah can join them at the big show in Orlando-
perhaps Golden Harper, Jackie Zeigle, Phebe Ko, etc.

1-A GIRLS- Wayne won their third straight Girls' 1A
title with only two "Elletts" running. Only St Joseph's
Amanda Chavez prevented a perfect score. Wayne's
Nessa Blackburn and Amanda Pace finished one-
two.

3-A GIRLS- Coach Bob Corry's extremely strong Cedar
team won their seventh straight title. This ties them with
Mountain View (1985-91) for the state's longest streak.
Cedar would have placed sixth overall in a combined state
meet. Freshman Kine Bjerga of Canyon View avenged
some earlier losses to Cedar's Alisha Bezanson to win the
individual title.
Individual Results- 1. Kine Bjerga, Canyon View (19:02);
2. Alisha Bezanson, Cedar City (19:21); 3. Amy Beutler, Ben
Lomond (19:49); 4. Holli Lewis, Bear River (19:58); 5.

three seconds) race of the day. East's Phebe Ko had the
second fastest time of the day to eek out the individual title
over Michelle Hatch of Mountain Crest and Tara Dunn of
Spanish Fork. Mountain Crest won their fourth title in five
years.
Individual Results- 1. Phebe Ko, East (18:45); 2. Michelle

(254); 10. Spanish Fork (254).
5-A GIRLS- The Bingham Girls seemed bent to prove they
are the best team the state has ever had. Scoring 19 points
in a strong year is just incredible. With Laura Zeigle
running alone (over one minute faster than anyone else that
day), the 1-5 split (1:34) was not impressive. However, the
2-5 split for the Lady Miners was 26 seconds. The race for
second place couldn't have been much closer as Mountain
View edged Davis by one point.
Individual Results- 1. Laura Zeigle, Bingham (17:41); 2.
Jackie Zeigle, Bingham (18:49); 3. Tiffany Strickland,
Mountain View (18:53); 4. Jess Winters, Bingham (18:54); 5.

as he had the fastest time of the day by 19 seconds. Roy

three-year reign, and brought the Bulldogs their first boys'
team title since 1976.

Crest (241); 10. Woods Cross (265).
5-A boyS- The #1 ranked Mountain View Bruins found
themselves in a battle as Bingham was only eight points
behind with 3/4's of a mile to go. However, the Bruins were
able to maintain their positions as the Miners faded in the
last 800, and they secured their third straight title. This
takes nothing away from the Bruins- it just shows how well
the Miners ran. Orem's Golden Harper defended his 1998
title with the second fastest time of the day. With Orem
serving as "bookends", the Bruins and Miners swept the
remainder of the top ten spots, with Mountain View's five
achieving a 32 second gap.
Individual Results- 1. Golden Harper, Orem (15:26); 2.
Chandler Goodwin, Mountain View (15:44); 3. Jeff Bullock,
Bingham (15:48); 4. Dustin Bybee, Mountain View (15:59); 5.

Team Scores- 1. Mountain View (29); 2. Bingham (60); 3.
Orem (83); 4. Alta (165); 5. Brighton (170); 6. Davis (174); 7.
Copper Hills (225); 8. Kearns (251); 9. Northridge (269); 10.
Taylorsville (272).

Random Thoughts: Cedar City's you "go, go, go"
Girls (under the guidance of Bob Corry) became only the
second school to win seven consecutive titles (Mountain
View is the other)... Provo's Josh Rohatinsky became the
first boy to win four individual titles.... Closest individual
race of the day- 4A Girls with Phebe Ko, Michelle Hatch,
and Tara Dunn finishing within three seconds of each
other.... Good recruiting coup- Spanish Fork's Christi
Howell was recruited from the drill team.... Closest team
race- 3A Boys with four points separating Wasatch, Judge
and Hurricane.... Laura Zeigle's 17:41 (33 seconds faster
than any girl has ever run the course) would have scored
(top five) for 49 of the 63 boys' teams.... Scoring the top
seven runners from each classification, 4A would have won
both boys (35-33-64-128-131) and girls (32-24-79-127-
136) races... Points are listed from 5A to 1A.... Bingham
girls showed why many feel they are the best team ever,
scoring 19 points in a very strong year.... Mountain View
boys ran a great race and put down a strong challenge from
Bingham to solidify their #1 national ranking as their top
five had a 32 second gap.... Bingham girls had a very poor
split- 1:34- maybe Laura should slow down to make the 1-5
split look impressive....
Park's Sportsman Meet of champions
Alan Hansen put together an outstanding post-season
meet for the top finishers from the State Cross Country
Championships. A special thanks also go to Park's
Sportsman, Mary's Trophies and Ron Burns of
Advantage Embroidery for donating the awards and
jerseys to make this a great event for Utah's finest athletes.
On a perfect fall day, records fell as the best of the best
raced over the 2.94 mile course that is also used for the
Wasatch Rendezvous. Bingham's Laura Zeigle, running
the course for the first time, destroyed the previous record
(17:34 by Sarah Gardiner in 1996) as she ran away from
the strong field to cross the line in 17:12. She was followed
by her sister Jackie (17:51) and East's Phebe Ko (17:57).
In team scoring, the 4A won bragging rights as they clipped
the 5A girls, 27-30.
Orem's Golden Harper put some daylight between
himself and the pack in the last half mile to win in 15:00 to
break his own course record of 15:02 set earlier this year.
He was closely followed by Mountain View's Brett Andrus
and Roy's Seth Pilkington, both timed in 15:06. The 5A
boys scored 21 points to defeat the 4A team who finished
with 42. Mountain View showed why they are ranked
number one in the nation as they placed four athletes in the
top eight of a great field.
