Bingham girls, Mountain View boys -
The US #1 Bingham 19 (1-2-4-5-7) dominated 5A girls with the winning 17:41 time (3 mi) of Laura Zeigle (right) clobbering the old course record by 32 seconds.  The boys competition was closer, with Mountain View (2-4-6-8-9) prevailing over Bingham (3-5-7-22-23), 29-60.  Bingham's 4th and 5th runners fell back in the last 800 meters.   Golden Harper of Orem won the 5A boys in 15:26, but Josh Rohatinsky of Provo ran 15:07.2 in 4A for fastest of the day.  Mountain View coach  David Houle said his team trained through the state meet with an eye on the Foot Locker West regional in California in December.

Mountain View Coach David Houle's report to Harrier Magazine:

We had a great State meet on Wednesday the 20th. Things went as planned. We had 5 guys in the top nine for the whole of the race. The meet was never close. We always had a 30-40 point lead. The guys were just cruising and keeping things in control. Golden Harper won the race with a time of 15:26. Chandler Goodwin of Mtn. View had a great race, running 15:44. Rounding out the top 9 was Jeff Bullock Bing., Dustin Bybee MV, Parker Lowe Bing, Brett Andrus MV, Tyceson Lowe Bing, Andrew Bybee MV, and Brock Call MV. Brett Andrus ran a good race despite the fact that he was throwing up right before the race. We ended up setting a scoring record of 29 points in a State with Nationally ranked teams. Our guys each ran an average of 10 seconds faster than last year. Our team time was 80 mins. 22 secs, this is 52 seconds faster than last year's National Championship team. We beat Bingham, ranked 16th by your magazine, by 31 points. Orem, which has beat Bingham twice, and possibly could have beat Bingham at state, had their number 2 runner fall early in the race. The runner that fell received a concussion from being stepped on his head. We bring this up because we feel that Orem is a very competitive team that could possibly be a nationally ranked team.

As far as the race went we were under control and used it as a gauge to prepare ourselves for the foot locker regional meet. Right from the gun our runners were in complete control with the top 5 in the top 10 positions. It remained that way for the rest of the race. Our runners never let any thoughts distract them from their goals and were prepared very well. When other teams were spent from their efforts after the race our guys were smiling and not worrying about their efforts. The real test is in December at the Western Regional at Mt sac.

The only setback we experienced was our front runner, Brock Call, who ran out of his asthma medicine and experienced breathing troubles. A fact that I think is amazing is that the Bingham girls, ranked #1 in the country, have a 1:34 gap 1-5, and the Mountain View boys, ranked #1 in the country, have an incredible 31 sec gap 1-5 in the State meet. We have been training solely for the Western Regional so our runners really trained through this race. It should be a great race for our guys in December at the Western Regional. There was a report on DyeStat of the race as a nail-biter. The person who reported this must not have been at the race. Orem and Bingham were diving at the finish line, and collapsing after crossing. We were controlled and confident. We led throughout the race, doubled second place, and it's ridiculous to call that a nail-biter. First was Golden Harper of Orem, second was Chandler Goodwin of Mountain View, third Jeff Bullock Bing., Dustin Bybee Mtn. View, Parker Low Bing., Brett Andrus, Mtn. View, Tyceson Low, Bing., Andrew Bybee, Mtn. View, Brock Call, Mtn. View, Byron Peacock, Orem. The team scores were Mountain View 29, Bingham 60, Orem 83, Alta 165, Brighton 170.

The girls State meet went as expected, with Bingham dominating. Their girls team ran well, with a gap of 1:34, and set a scoring record of 19. The race was actually for second place. Mountain View girls avenged their earlier loss to Davis, and at the Region championships, to take second place. We were able to get some younger girls prepared to run in State, and it paid off with a second place finish. The race was won by Laura Zeigle in an incredible 17:41, followed by Jackie Zeigle and Tiffany Strickland of Mountain View. All three girls are sophomores. Fourth place was Jess Winters from Bingham, fifth was Lisa Paxton Bing., sixth was Emily King Davis, seventh Charity Catmull Bing., eighth Stephany Bierwolf Viewmont, ninth Catherine Anderson Davis, and tenth Kristen Coombs Layton. Bingham had 19, Mountain View 103, third was Davis 104, Orem 120, Cottonwood 139.
