Rhode Island Class Meets

10/30/99

Rhode Island State Meet is set for this Sunday, November 7, at Fort Adams

State Park in Newport. The traditional state meet course at Bryant College

is unavailable due to construction at the college. The Fort Adams course is

decent, wide open through fields, no woods, and somewhat slow due to heavy

grass and always wet conditions at Fort Adams due to ground water and mud

(right on Atlantic Ocean).
Class meets were held last Saturday. In the top

race of the day, junior Jerry Bonner, last year's state titlist, led

Cumberland to a huge upset over defending team state champion Bishop

Hendricken 41-42.

State meet should come down to Bishop Hendricken, Cumberland, and Ponaganset,

with LaSalle Academy a strong fourth. Toll Gate, North Kingstown,

Smithfield, Chariho, and South Kingstown look to be fighting for the final

two spots in the New Englands next Saturday at Wickham Park in Connecticut.

Bonner (16:41 last week) looks to be the individual favorite again, with Cyr

(17:10 with no competition), Kieliszak (17:01), and Lawson (17:16) close

behind. Parenteau (17:18), McConnell (17:28), and Malachowski (17:50 despite

illness last weekend should round out the top seven for First Team All-State.
