Cross Country 1999

Ohio State Meet Predictions - Boys

by Myron and Yolanda Cline

Division I Boys Ohio Cross Country

Cincinnati is a powerhouse area as defending state champ St. Xavier,
LaSalle, and Elder have traded wins throughout the season. Often the
state champion has come from one of these storied programs and that has
been true in much of the big school thinking in the ‘99 season as well.
St. Xavier established itself in the driver seat with an impressive 58,
LaSalle 87, Elder 107 regional win at Troy. Possible challenges to the
strong Cincinnati teams will come from Brunswick and Pickerington.
Pickerington seems to be peaking at just the right time and we will
pick the them to upset the defending state champion in what promises to
be a barn burner of a race.

Cline’s Top Ten picks:

1. Pickerington 6. Lakewood
2. Cincinnati St. Xavier 7. Hudson
3. Brunswick 8. Cincinnati Moeller
4. Cincinnati LaSalle 9. Ashland
5. Cincinnati Elder 10. Stongsville

Individuals: LaSalle’s Steve Padget (3) posted the fastest time in any
Ohio Regional race with his 15:29 win at Troy. Other contenders would
be Chris Acs of Niles McKinley and Pickerington Junior Chris Basinger
(21), Joel McDaniel, Brunswick (8) , all regional winners plus; Dave
Alber, Vandalia Butler (6), Mason Ward of Colerain (7) and Jerry
Claunch, Lakota East, (10) from the deep Troy Regional. ‘98 State meet
placing in parenthesis

The much anticipated rematch of 1998 champion Girard from the Northeast
with Eaton runner up from the Southwest, to settle who is number one in
‘99 just got unbelievably scrambled as each finished third in their
respective regionals. Girard was reportedly running ill and Eaton got
caught in a tight three way race with Springfield Northwestern and
Kettering Alter at Troy, where the three were separated by only 11
points. Those three along with Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, Watkins
Memorial and Girard, if they can get healthy, all have to be viewed as
legitimate title threats. Sorting it all out is extremely tough but we
will give one shaky vote to Cardinal Mooney to win it all, based on
their strong regional race.

Cline’s Top Ten Picks:

1. Youngstown Cardinal Mooney 6. Kettering Alter
2. Watkins Memorial 7. Bay Village
3. Northwestern 8. Minerva
4. Eaton 9. Field
5. Girard 10. Elyria Catholic

Individuals: The Individual Championship seems about as open as the
team as potential champ Craig Swisher of Gallia crashed in the regional
heat and failed to qualify. Likely pick would be Aurora Senior James
Sjostrum who has 46th in the ‘98 state meet race.

Division III Boys Ohio Cross Country

While McDonald has maintained first place all season in the coaches
poll, it has been Liberty Benton who has sparkled in dominating efforts
in both district and regional wins. These two teams will square off for
the first head to head meeting since McDonald defeated the Eagles rather
handily in the Tiffin Columbian Carnival in early September. We will go
with late peaking Liberty Benton.

Cline’s Top Ten Picks:

1. Liberty Benton 6. East Canton
2. McDonald 7. Ft. Loramie
3. Burton Berkshire 8. Fostoria St. Wendelin
4. Convoy Crestview 9. Maplewood
5. Columbus Grove 10. Sandusky St. Marys

Individuals: Potential winners include Brian Olinger, Ridgewood who ran
to a 16:44 twenty second victory on the rugged Lancaster Regional
course. Kevin Tschell, Louisville also a twenty second victor in 16:33
at Youngstown Boardman. Others who could be in the hunt include Jeremy
Riehm of Old Fort, Jon Martin of Liberty Benton and Josh Bohman of
Convoy Crestview.
