Colonie's turn to win leaves Saratoga girls on the sidelines for State Meet

11/6/99

Boys Results - Girls Results

The see-saw rivalry between nationally ranked neighbors Saratoga and Colonie turned Colonie's way in a 30-32 Class A victory that was in doubt until the fifth runner struggled across the finish line.  Jen Kramer, Colonie's erstwhile ace who missed most of the season recuperating from a stress fracture, was that fifth runner.  But she stopped inexplicably 5 meters short of the finish line as other runners loomed and threatened to wipe out Colonie's slender edge.   With screaming at her, Kramer she slowly started moving again and unsteadily crossed the finish line 7 seconds ahead of Saratoga's fifth scorer.

"I don't even know what I was thinking," Kramer told the Saratoga Gazette's Mike MacAam. " I got a little dizzy, and I saw a line on the ground. I didn't realize that I wasn't done. I really thought it was the end. I don't know how I got started again."

Earlier, Colonie's No. 1 Katie Twarog outduelled Saratoga's No. 1 Danielle Coon by 2 seconds to win the race in 17:32.   Colonie also placed Nicole Susser 4th, Ashleigh Bordwell 5th, Ashley Tremblay 9th and Kramer 11th for its 30 points.  Saratoga had Kate Markopoulos 3rd, Tessa Auwarter 7th, Margie Boltzer 8th, and Liz Carlsson 12th for 32.   All 10 scorers were within 53 seconds.

After Colonie beat Saratoga by one point at the Manhattan Invitational, Saratoga rebounded to beat Colonie in a dual meet and the Suburban Conference championship.  Under New York rules, only the district winner goes to next week's NYSPHSAA state meet, but the Colonie and Saratoga will likely get to break their season tie November 20 when the New York Federation meet brings together the top teams from all of New York's various associations of public and private schools.

Caitlin Hicklin of Queensbury, running in Class B, had the fastest girls time of the day, 17:26.

Justin Corelli of Shaker was the class of boys action, winning Class A in 15:10.  Saratoga won Class A with 55 points (Shenendehowa 62).
