Cross Country 1999

Nevada State Meet

11/6/99 at Sparks NV
5k - 4/5 difficulty - sunny and mild, low 70s, light winds.

Perfect day for running:  4500-4600ft elevation, a steeplechase water pit to clear at the 1-mile and 3-mile
marks, and a bear of a (approx. 300m) hill at the 2.25 mile mark.

In the 4A race, Abby Miller hit the mile in 5:47, freshman star Shana
Sparks of Carson HS was 4 seconds behind. Sparks closed to within a few
steps about 400m later, but then Miller took off. Abby opened about a 70m
lead at 2 miles (did not get time), lengthened lead to finish in a new
course record 18:51 (her 1997 record: 19:17). Sparks 2nd in 19:33, the 3rd
fastest runner w/4th fastest time ever on course (used throughout 1990s,
maybe back to 1980s).

Abby's Green Valley HS/Henderson team won 4A. North Tahoe HS upset the
Las Vegas schools for the boys 4A title.

from Phil Lawton

In boys competition South Tahoe pulled a mild upset in 4A, beating
the Southern Zone Champions, Bonanza, who placed third behind Basic
(runner-up in the Southern Zone). In 3A competetion Boulder City won easily
over rebuilding North Tahoe and Spring Creek. In girls team competition Green
Valley won, as expected, over a surprisingly strong McQueen team. Boulder
City’s girls completed the sweep for Eagles of southern Nevada, winning over
Spring Creek and North Tahoe.

The individual honors belonged to Cory Jeffers and Abby Miller. Bret Ferrier
of Lowry, the Northern Zone Champ, gave Jeffers a battle for the first two
miles before the Bonanza senior gradually pulled away. This was Jeffers’
second straight win at State. For Miller, one of the top runners in the
country, it was a “walk in the park” as she shattered her old course record,
which she had set in 1997 as a sophomore. Freshman Shanna Sparks of Carson,
who had had finished 6th overall at the Stanford Invitational, ran well, but
the Green Valley senior was not about to relinquish her crown. It was Abby
Miller’s fourth straight State Championship.
