Cross Country 1999

Southern Nevada Zone Meet

10/30/99 at Indian Springs, NV
High desert terrain: 5K (4/5 difficulty)
Weather conditions: good--sunny and warm (mid 70’s) light winds

from Phil Lawton

Comments: No real surprises here. In boys 4A competition Bonanza, led by Cory
Jeffers and Jon Spendlove, had too much depth to not prevail. The Bengals
match up with South Tahoe (winners of the Northern Zone) next week should be
interesting. In a mild upset Cimarron qualified for State over Silverado. The
boys 4A race was marred by THREE false starts and recalls that seemed to sap
the energy of the front runners and may have contributed to “slow” times.
Plus the desert terrain was pretty well “chewed up” by the time the 4A
runners got to race. Boulder City had a “cake walk” among lower-divison
teams. Look for them to win State next week.

Girls competition showed just
how good Green Valley is--and probably deserving of some kind of “national
ranking.” Abby Miller seems “a lock” for her fourth individual State title
next week and the Gators seem destined to get that elusive first team State
Championship for coach Jeff Doyle. Likewise, Boulder City’s girls had an easy
time of it and will be the 3A favorites next week at State. All the times are
deceptively slow as evidenced by Jeffers’ and Miller’s “slow” times. (Both
ran over two minutes faster last week at Mt. SAC.) The Indian Springs course
is no “walk in the park” with its soft footing and rocky desert wash. John
Dixon (Foothill head coach) spoke for most Southern Nevada coaches when he
lamented loudly: “We need a new course for next year!”
