BOYS

New Jersey HS harriers got a perfect day at the challenging Holmdel County Park course yesterday and made the most of it with indidvidual times rocketing down from earlier performances there this season, even though the state's top runner, Brian Kerwin of Christian Brothers. was content to run a team race in a 1-2-3-4 finish, stepping across the line barely first in 16:28.5.
The top performer of the day was Joe Halin of Cherokee in the Gr. IV race as he broke his Holmdel PR by almost a minute with a 16:09 victory. Not far behind was Walton Kingsbery of Red Bank, who took the Gr. III race off a slow pace in 16:11.
CBA looked every bit at least the 3rd best in the nation with a team average (16:32) that ranks 6th all time on the course and is just 10 seconds a man slower than the record held by the 1982 Colt club. Cherokee averaged 16:52 and Paul VI, 2nd to CBA in the Parochial A race, matched that performance.
There were an even 50 runners under 17:00, which is the benchmark for a good performance on the 5K course which opens with a long uphill run and later takes the runners into the "bowl," just past the 2M mark which has a treacherous downhill slope, followed by a 400M or more climb out of the depression.
The other team winners, all but one expected, were Red Bank in Gr. III, Hopewell Valley in Gr. II, Rumson in Gr. I and Mater Dei with an upset of defending Wildwood Catholic in Parochial B.

GIRLS

All eyes in the girls' races at Holmdel yesterday were on gr. II where the state's two Footlocker contenders, Erin Donohue of Haddonfield and Lily Thomas of Somerville were to meet---both undefeated this season.
The race lived up to expectations with Donohue taking the lead, opening a fair gap in the hill, but having to struggle to hold off Thomas' late charge when they returned to the flats. Erin won by 15-20 yards in 18:30, taking six seconds off her PR on the course and moving her past Jodie Bilotta to 12th place on the all-time Holmdel list. Thomas ran 18;34 to take over 13th spot.
Rumson and Hopewell Valley, neither of which had ever won a group CC title before, both completed boy-girl double, with HoVall also turning in the best performance of the six races, seven seconds a girl ahead of Gr. IV repeat winner Ridgewood.
Moorestown, which had gone into the meet a strong favorite in Gr. III, needed a tie-breaker to defeat defending Middletown South after both finished with 74 points for the first five runners.
After rooting boyfriend Brian Kerwin home in the boys' Parochial A race, Lindsey Gallo took the gr. IV race by 100 yards from defending Beth Androski of Hackensack in 18:55. The Gr. III race provided a major upset when first-year CC runner Shahnaz Iqbal (a native of Saudi Arabia who arrived in J via Saskatchewan, won in 19:53. Favored Marianne Herbst of mt. Olive was back in 7th place, but qualified for the AG meet.
The Parochialk races provided an upset in the A division when Pingry defeated Red Bank Catholic and Msgr. Donovan. St. Rose had a third straight B victory over Morris Cathoilic, whose two best distance runners star on a state championship soccer team in the fall.
