The weather conditions were perfect for running. Temperatures were in

the 60's, clear skies and no wind.

The Flathead boy's cross country team made it three team championships

in a row by winning easily at the state cross country meet held at

Helena. Flathead managed to place all five runners in the top eight for

a record breaking score of 21 points. Junior David Vidal defended his

state title from last year by taking Rowdy Sargeson (Helena Capital) in

the last 800 yards to win in a great time of 14:42. Flathead's Kevin

Clarly also managed to overtake Sargeson at the finish with both runners

finishing in 14:59. Flathead's average time for their top five was

15:03 minutes. In the girls' competiton CMR also managed to make it

three team championships in a row. Sophomore Heidi Lane from CMR passed

defending champion Amber Arvidson (Flathead) in the last 400 meters of

the race to set a new state meet record of 17:45. Arvidson ran a

respectable time of 17:56.

Highlights by Tony Banovich

This same course (Montana runs 3 miles for both boys and girls) has been

used for the state meet for about a decade, so race records do have some

relevance.
4 Classes; AA, A, B, and C. Largest = AA, Smallest = C.
AA Boys. Kalispell dominated with a total score of 21 points, 3 of top 4, 4

of top 6, and their 5th runner in 8th place and a spread of only :41. Top

finisher was Junior David Vidal who ran 14:42. This was only 1 second off

the state record set by Jorn Grimsley in 1993 (Grimsley went on to win the

USATF Junior XC in 1993 or 1994). Kevin Clary of Kalispell was second in

14:59, followed by Rowdy Sargeson of Helena Capital, also at 14:59.
AA Girls. Heidi Lane of C.M. Russel in Great Falls set a new state record

at 17:45. Heidi is only a Sophmore.
B Boys. Casey Jermyn of Plains (Senior) ran perhaps the performance of the

day. Winning by 62 seconds, he won in 14:55, setting a new class record

(breaking the record of 15:05 that he had set in 1998). He was very much in

control throughout the race and finished comfortably. I think he could have

really given Vidal a race if they had been in the same class.
Please feel free to contact me, off-list, if you would like any more
