State Meet Preview from Dave Denny

In the 4A girls team battle it appears to be West Plains (winner 5 of the last 7)and Kirkwood, (who won in 97), but there are 4 or 5 other teams that could contend. West Plains is very tough up front with one of the individual favorites, Amanda Marcak, leading their very successful team. Kirkwood is led by Maggie Nelson and should be very close to West Plains. Francis Howell from the St. Louis area, and Liberty, Blue Springs and Lee's Summit from the Kansas City area could be top 3 contenders. Individually for the girls, Marcak and Laura Kennedy, from Lafayette appear to be the favorites for the title. Other possible contenders could be Katherine Bonugl, Francis Howell; Jackie Pirtle, Francis Howell North; and Nicole Graham, from Blue Springs High School.

For the 4A Boys, West Plains, Liberty, and St. Louis University High appear to be the top 3 contenders for the title. West Plains, led by Jason Sandfort (the top returning individual from last year-2nd) is a perrenial power. Liberty has never won a cross country state championship, but won the track championship last spring, with dominantly distance runners. SLUH has won one harrier title, way back in 1961, but has been very tough in the St. Louis area this season. Other contenders could be CBC (St.Louis), Jefferson City, and Lee's Summit. For the individual title, it appears to be a three man battle. Matt Tegenkamp has gone undefeated this season, with a 17 second victory, the closest race of the year. He has twice defeated Sandfort and twice defeated Chris Williams (the 3 time Kansas state champ). Sandfort (a junior) is running very strong right now and will be looking for revenge. Tanner (a senior) is very talented and was close to Sandfort last week in sectionals. Other possible contenders could be Ryan Hampton from Liberty, Ted Snodgrass from SLUH, John Stanton-Geddes from Webster Groves, and Dave Mertens from Marquette.
