River Hill boys and Mike Styczynski
Detailed Results: Large
Schools - Small Schools
Middletown girls (26) and River Hill boys (33) were dominant victors in the
large school division of the 4th Interstate Classic.
Middletown freshman Emily Buzzell's debut at the high school level was
impressive as she broke the course record in 18:30.2, a 42-second margin over
2-time state track champion jr Lee McDuff of River Hill. Senior Kara
Benamati of Gettysburg PA (19:37.1) was third and jr Randy Buzzell of Middletown
(19:41.0) fourth. The top four held their positions throughout the
race. Emily Buzzell said she felt stronger today than in last week's
scrimmage at River Hill - "I didn't feel like I was going to die at the
2-mile mark." McDuff said she was pleased that she ran 31 seconds
faster than last year on this course, which gave her the 7th best mark on this
course (configured in 1992). Randy Buzzell tripped and fell in the
second mile, which may have cost her a few seconds.
Although a veteran team (2-time defending Maryland 2A champion with the
fastest overall time both years), Middletown was one of the youngest teams in
the race today with three freshmen on the varsity. They nailed down 5 of
the top 9 places and 7 of the top 20 to beat Gettysburg, 26-78. They also
had the winner and runner-up in the girls JV race.
In the boys large school division, River Hill was led by winner sr Mike
Styczynski (16:25.1, fourth best on the present course) and 3rd place sr Steve
Chu (16:40.7). A surprising second was jr Brian Murphy of Urbana (16:37,
9th best ever on this course). Running unattached, Cordis Stanfield of
Baltimore was fourth in 16:45.
River Hill placed 1-3-5-9-15, with the last score coming from so Justin
Serota, whose 18:00.5 was PR by 34 seconds. River Hill beat
runnerup Thomas Johnson, 33-82.
