Massachusetts Boys State Meet Preview

by John Molvar 11/9

Div 1 - Div 2 - Div 3 - Div 4 - Central 1 - Central 2 - West 1 - West 2 - Overall -

Division 1

Ahmed is the favorite here and only his new training

mate Gartrell could give him trouble. The first 2

should have quite a gap on the rest. Both have had

one bad race this year but are primed for this one.

Look for a winning time of 15.35. Ahmed is the

National Indoor HS 800 Champion. Barshard and

Bartoloni could battle for 3rd. Both have had

checkered seasons so it is a tough call. Todd Glew is

one of if not the best sophs in the state and is

improving rapidly. Others to look for include Milers

Joseph and Jacobson and MVC champ Griffin. Paul

Machado of NB and Conover are injured and are out of

contention. Seven individuals not on the top 5 teams

qualify and it looks like individuals will need a top

10 finish to make it in this toughest division.

Div 1 Teams

The Prep has their best team in years and should win.

Cambridge is the only team with a chance of beating

them but I can see Prep getting 6 in before R&Ls 3rd.

Five teams qualify and it looks like Brookline,

Lowell and Lawrence. Haverhill and Chelmsford both

have a chance if they come up big on race day. Other

than Gartrell, BCH has it’s worst team is school

history. When 4 of my brothers ran there, they were

often in contention to win the NE XC title.

Division 2

This is the race of the day. Colangelo, with his

experience, numerous individual and team titles,

killer kick and big meet reputation is the obvious

favorite. However, Emond is undefeated and having a

great year. I have heard he is thinking upset. Look

for a time of 15.25. The race for second should be

between Palazola and Shoemaker. An interesting top 10

battle will pit sophs Murphy and Cambodian born Tran,

both of whom want to beat Glew’s time in div 1.

Pollack and Hammond are injured and out of contention.

The last individual qualifier could finish as low as

20.

1 Tristan Colangelo, Gloucester (9.17,4.17)

2 Matt Emond, Marshfield (9.23)

3 *Josh Palazola, Gloucester (9.40,4.29)

27 Bobby Bolcome, Gloucester (may not run)

28 Tom Watson, Gloucester (may not run)

29 ** Tony Vitlale, Natick

Div 2 Teams

The big G could rest half its team and still win. It

should be a rout. W-H looked very strong until

Hammond went down with a hamsting tear. The race for

3rd between Marshfield, L-S and injury wrecked WA

should be very close and every place will count.

Newton South could get in if WA continues to struggle.

Division 3

This race will go significantly slower than div 1 and

div 2 and will have the look of a dual meet between OA

and Saugus with OA winning. It is a 3 man race

between the Santoro brothers and man on a mission Nat

Brown. Steve doesn’t want to lose to kid brother

again. Look for a winning time of 16.10. After the

top 3 there is a drop off. Afarian is injured and is

out of contention. The last qualifying individual

could be as low as 25, so don’t quit!

1 **Rob Santoro, Oliver Ames (9.59,4.43)

2 Nat Brown, Wellesley

3 Steve Santoro, Oliver Ames (9.48,4.30,1.59)

Division 4

Atkinson has not been able to get back to where he was

last year when he exploded onto the Mass scene. He

should win but newcomer Scott would like to make him

work for it. Look for a winning time of 16.15.

3 Rob Welch, Seekonk (9.57)

4 Ryan Kearney, Tyngsboro (10.15)

9 Loran Veigas, Needham (div 4?)

Div 4 Teams

Seekonk should win this weak division.

Central Div 1

Drappi is in his first year of running XC and has been

the biggest surprise of the year. There is no reason

to expect he won’t win here. Look for a winning time

of 14.30. The best team in the state could take 4 of

the top 6 slots. Dark horse Korhonen is coming on

strong and should be watched. The last qualifying

individual needs to be about 15th place.

1 John Drappi, St Johns (S) (2.00)

2 *Tim Creedon, Wachusett (4.35)

3 Mike Ahern St John's (S) (4.24)

Central Div 1 Teams

This is just a tune up for STJ before they take on the

big G and and the other Prep on the mountain. Three

teams qualify and Wachusett is a lock. Fitchburg

seems to have the edge over Doherty.

Central Div 2

Teammates Gilman and Hallquist should break away from

defending champ Cronin. Next week they will find

where they really stand in the state. Look for a

winning time of 14.40. One to watch is frosh

Tenerowicz who could crack the top 15. The last

qualifying individual will need to be top 10.

1 Jon Gilman, Murdock (4.28)

2 Evan Hallquist, Murdock (4.28,9.57)

3 *Geoff Cronin, Millbury (4.29,1.59)

West Div 1

The Internet has not reached Western Mass yet, so I

can’t give much of a preview. Also, don’t expect to

find the results either Online or in any major

newspapers. And most of all, don’t count on the Mass

State Track Coaches Association to post any results.

Their abysmal record in this area makes it likely that

the Eastern Meets won’t even be posted on their own

web site. I follow the national scene and Mass is

the only state with this absurd problem.
