Molvar Boys List 11/4

Updated Preview: 1999 Massachusetts Boys

revised 11/4
Individuals
No changes near the top of the list but several once
you get past 20. As happens every year, injuries
knock some out of contention and mental burn out
befalls others. They get replaced by guys who are
improving rapidly. One of those is Rob Santoro of
Oliver Ames, who shocked his older brother and
everyone else with his surprise win at his league
meet. He is now the top rated sophomore in the state,
just ahead of Glew and Murphy. The All state meet
will determine who is the best sophomore. Another who
moved way up is resurgent Nat Brown after his runaway
victory over the favorites in his league meet.

Teams
Teams
What happens to a team that loses a 4.02 and a 4.14
miler and loses one of the best coaches in the state
and has the coach replaced by a rookie coach? Answer:
They go on to win a state title. That is the
situation at Oliver Ames where they appear poised to
win the small school state title after dominating
their league meet. Another team that may be peaking
perfectly is the Lowell team coached by my former
college teammate Phil Maia. He won an upset victory
in the competitive MVC. They edged a Lawrence team
that Freddie Braz has resurrected from the ashes.
Lowell cant celebrate for long because they will be
have to fight the same MVC teams all over again to get
one of the 2 final qualifying slots in the Div I
Eastern Mass meet to get to the all state meet. While
the MVC has no front running individuals or teams they
are probably the deepest league both in team strength
and individually. On the other side of the coin, this
is a season has been one to forget for Westford
Acadamy. Last year at this time they appeared poised
to end the Gloucester streak. One year later the
team has fallen off a cliff due to injuries and other
woes. It is a good program so I would expect them to
be back stronger next year. Gloucester won their
league meet but still doesnt appear to have enough to
stop St Johns (S). Their top 4 are rounding into form
but they will need Smith to get back to where he was
last year or a breakthrough race from one of the young
guys (Thoms, Brancleone, Bolcome or Watson) at the all
state to keep the streak going. Even that may not be
enough to stop Georgie and Co.
