by John Molvar

Updated Preview: 1999 Massachusetts Boys
by John Molvar
revised 10/19

Individuals

Matt Emond ran his first big race of the year and won

impressively at Brown. Byron Gartrell also won

impressively in Boston, in a race where Said Ahmed

struggled and finished far back. Look for him to turn

things around before the season ends.

Teams

There is a change at the top. After St Johns

(Shewsbury’s) overwhelming win at the Brown

Invitational they deserve the number one ranking. It

is usually a mistake to rank Gloucester anything other

than number one as doubters found out last year. This

may serve to motivate some of the Gloucester runners.

It is going to be one heck of a meet on the mountain

between those two teams. St Johns (Danvers) also ran

well easily beating a less than full strength

Cambridge team. Meanwhile, Whitman-Hanson had a

strong showing in Boston to move up in the rankings.
