Report from the Baton Rouge Advocate:

By ROBIN FAMBROUGH
Advocate sportswriter

Meets like the Catholic High Invitational are usually a showcase for big
schools that feature a large base of cross country runners.

Two Division IV-Class 2A schools, Episcopal and Newman, proved less can be
more by winning the team titles at the annual meet that attracted 950
runners to Highland Road Park on Saturday.

Top-ranked Episcopal scored 43 points to win the 46-team varsity boys
division. Second-ranked Newman tallied 110 points to win the 30-team girls
division.

Jimmy Wiggins of St. Paul and Jackie John of Iowa didn't have personal-best
times due to the rain-soaked course. The two individual winners set fast
paces the competition couldn't match.

Wiggins had a winning three-mile time of 15 minutes, 36 seconds. John, who
was second at last week's St. Joseph's Academy Invitational at Highland, won
the two-mile girls race in 12:20.

Although Wiggins led virtually from the opening gun, Episcopal got in
position to win by placing three runners in the top 10. Gregg Fell was
second (15:54), Andrew Huston placed fourth (16:17) and Steve Geiser was
10th (16:41).

Brother Martin was second in the boys division with 67 points, followed by
Jesuit of Dallas (124), Assumption (171) and Baton Rouge High (218).

"Again, I'm very pleased with the way we ran as a team,'' Episcopal coach
Claney Duplechin said. "I'm happy for Fell and Huston ... they both ran
well. Our fifth man today was Louis Bonnecaze and he stepped up."

The girls standings were quite different than those SJA meet won by
top-ranked Mount Carmel of New Orleans, followed by Parkview Baptist and
Newman.

Another local school, Division I St. Joseph's, placed second with 135. Mount
Carmel (149), Parkview (165) and St. Scholastica (167) rounded out the top
five.

Megan Whelton was 12th to lead Newman.

"I think our depth was what won it for us," Newman coach Pete Flora said. "I
hope they are proud of this (accomplishment as a Class 2A school)."

Course conditions forced Wiggins to abandon his pre-race plans.

"I had one plan if the course was dry," Wiggins said. "That went out the
window. I didn't plan it, I just started running. I didn't feel that good on
the first and second mile, but on the third mile I got stronger."

John said lessons learned at the SJA meet prompted her to push the pace and
claim the lead right before one-mile mark.

"Last week she (SJA winner Kate Ripple of Parkview) took off at the one mile
mark," John said. "I did it this week and I thought she'd come with me. It
was wet, but I was more comfortable this week. I got used to the hills."

Megan Kliebert of E.D. White was second to John, followed by three Parkview
runners, Ripple, Jennifer Davis and Alicia Harris.

Two Sullivan runners, Grace Nathanson (6th) and Jessica Huber (9th), and
Kathryn Cleland of SJA (10th) also had top finishes.
