Cross Country 1999

Kansas State Meet

10/30/99
6A-5A held at Bob Timmon's Rimrock Farm, Lawrence
4A, 3A, 2A-1A at Wamego Country Club

from Tony Bozarth, Olathe East Cross Country Coach

6A Boys: SM Northwest completed a dominating season by running to a record
low 25 point total. The title was SMNW sixth straight. Chris Williams
(Lawrence) joined Billy Mills (Haskell) and Steve Fein (SMNW) as the only
boys to win three straight state titles in the large school class. Williams
made his break-away move up the Billy Mills Hill, 800 yards from the finish.
Northwest dominated the race from the early going, then powered to the finish
to close out the victory.

6A Girls: SM East came back from a loss to SMNW at their regional meet to
upend the two-time champs, winning back the title they last won in 1997.
Team running and close packing were they keys to East's win. Amanda Pape
(Olathe South) completed an unbeaten season by dominating the girls side for
a 26 second win over Cate Holston (Topeka Washburn Rural)

5A Boys: Jack Bowman's Great Bend team gave their long-time coach the best
of all retirement presents-a state title, with the decision going to the
pusher! Great Bend and Liberal, both of the Western Athletic Conference,
see-sawed back and forth over the course with the final decision not in until
the final straight. Scott Mitchell (Wichita Kaupan Mt. Carmel) won his first
state title after giving up soccer this season to concentrate on cross
country. He pulled away from Andre Bird (Liberal) and Brian Raggett
(Aquinas) across the Jim Ryun Skyline in the last 400.

5A Girls: Wichita Carroll continued it's domination of Class 5A girls, but
not without an anxious moment when front-runner Andrea Mohr staggered and
collapsed in the final homestretch. Mohr crawled across the line to claim
fourth. Shauna Burrell of Topeka Seaman claimed the victory in 12:33.

4A Boys: Matt Noonan led his Baldwin team to a solid 30 point win over Wamego
with a 10 second victory. Noonan credited his sister Megan, the girls
runner-up, with inspiring him to the victory.

4A Girls: Ottawa edged Topeka Hayde 91-95 to claim their fourth straight
class 4A win. The team race saw the top four teams within 15 points. Trisha
Culbertson (Burlington) and Megan Noonan (Baldwin) seperated themselved from
the field, then raced to a 1-2 finish.

3A Boys: Ellsworth's Ben Orozco won his second state crown, racing to a
solind 15:38 to 15:58 win over Hesston's Justin Rempel (last year's triple
state track champion). Orozco moved away in the middle of the race, citing a
need to get away from Rempel's kick. Northern Heights completed a team
double with a tight 3 point win over Hoisington.

3A Girls: Northern Heights began their double victory with a 5 point win
over Southwestern Heights. The individual title stayed in the Mortimer
family from Riley Country, as Erin Mortimer won the title that big sister Amy
(now at Kansas State) won for four years.

2A-1A Boys: Stanton County won another state title, with Joe Warner leading
the team by repeating his individual victory.

2A-1A Girls: Olpe (72), Syracuse (80) and Dighton (90) provided a tight team
race in the smallest class. Libby Lewis from Syracuse won the individual
title, after taking second in the state golf tournament last week!
