Cross Country 1999

17th Spanish River Invitational

9/25 at Patch Reef Park, Boca Raton FL
3 miles, flat, three 1-mile loops, 40 % paved, 60% soft grass - rainy, warm, mid 80s

Rained throughout the meet, with one very
heavy downpour just before the last varsity race (boys 1a/2a) race, so the
asphalt became slicker and slicker as the morning wore on, and the grass
"bowl" part became extremely muddy (more than one runner losing a shoe in
the mud).

Boys 1a/2a

Start was delayed due to heavy downpour just before the gun
should have gone off, which apprently temporarily knocked out the timing
device. Unfortunately, the 30 boys teams had already been called to the
line prior to the delay. The heavy rain made the course very slick and
muddy, but kept it much cooler than it might have been for an 11:20 am
start in south Florida.
A pack of 4, with Rolf Steier, Thomas Shannon, Omar Osbourne and Dan Barry
came through the mile in 4:55. Steier began to pull away as Osbourne and
and Shannon dropped slightly back, but also drew away from Barry. Osbourne
made a move at 1 1/2 to try to catch the leader, passing Shannon, but
not significantly making a dent in the lead. Steier continued to
gradually pull away in the last mile, as Shannon closed very well and
passed Osbourne in the last half mile for second place.
