Cross Country 1999

Northern California at Mt. SAC

by Keith Conning

This was a difficult weekend for me. Just before I left the Red Roof Inn in San Dimas for the Friday session, I received a call from my wife Marian in Berkeley. She told me that my older brother Stanley, 64, was having open-heart surgery in Palatine, Illinois. This was a big shock as my brother had been in good health and exercises regularly. He ran the 440 for Lincoln (San Francisco) as a junior in 1952. The doctors discovered a 99% blockage in one of the main veins in his heart. He could have died within a few days. The double bypass operation lasted five hours. Fortunately, the operation was successful and he is now recovering. He won't be able to drive for several weeks. Stan is a traveling salesman for Carlsen Systems, which is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska.

Northern California is composed of six C.I.F. Sections: Central Coast, North Coast, Northern, Oakland, Sac-Joaquin, and San Francisco.

Northern California teams and athletes ran well this weekend.

Longtime Bellarmine Prep (San Jose) coach Terry Ward, the brother of KGO radio talk show host "Uncle" Bernie Ward, asked his runner Neil Davis why he did better this year. Davis responded: "I ran faster." I would like to thank Terry for his prays for my brother.

Chris Lanese (Moreau Catholic, Hayward) e-mailed: "My confidence is way up after Mt. SAC. I have no doubt I could have run a 15:15 if I had raced the course before, and I look forward to the post season now."

San Lorenzo Valley (Felton), led by Alejandra Barrientos, had the top girls' team time of the weekend.

Sara Bei (Montgomery, Santa Rosa) had the fastest girls' time of the weekend.

Some names were not available at press time.
