Rankings

It’s About that time ...

Now that weather has changed, and the chill has emerged in the ari, and
the first real rains have arrived (and may never leave) cross country
season has arrived at its best. This is the time where it all pays off,
where it allcomes together, where all the sweat and grit and drive all
have their cumulative results.

We have entered the championship phase of our season, and the struggles
now focus on area bragging rights as we vie for league titles and
placings. Often the best races of the season are left in a race that
matters to so much for anything but the pride of being able to say “I
put it all out there today for my school.” Others are gearing up for
the Meet of Champions, and the fortunate few programs are able to save
their emotional fever for the State Meet.

So as the days dwindle to just a few remaining weeks and days, we could
do a lot worse than indulge ourselves and look back at the season that
may have started somewhere in the summer and congratulate ourselves on
having garnered a measure of our success as coaches and runners through
the sheer dint of our effort. All our triumph and glory and achievement
are well deserved. Relish the moment...now, go out and run some more.

NCS shows off at Mt. SAC
DLS Wins D-2 Sweeps at Mt. SAC;
Granada Girls Dominate D-4 Top Race

The Mt. SAC Invitational was a great set of races, and the North Coast
Section did a great job. Many of the NCS teams traveled to smoggy
Walnut ad comported themselves right well. A smattering of those results
are tucked into the league summaries below.
The league championships are right here, right now. This humble
publication is overlapping with the various finals, but oh, well... what
we have this edition is a league-by-league rundown of the top teams and
individuals leading up to the league meets. There will be a followup
edition shortly sa the leagues and conferences wind down and we head
into the Meet of Champions.
And how do the legue competitions look? Read on:

Alameda-Contra Costa Athletic League
Boys: After the round of three center meets, Piedmont emerged having
eked out a narrow margin over St. Mary’s. The last center meet had the
Highlanders, down a runner, hang on to beat the Panthers on the
tie-breaker. Perhaps the most notable reason for Piedmont’s league
lead is the frontrunning of Tom Phelps, who has beaten a stubborn
Nathan Brasmassery of Alameda in each ACCAL meet. St. Mary’s charge is
led by Rudy Vasquez. Alameda has managed to narrowly edge St. Joseph’s
for 3rd, with the last meet being a 1 point Hornet advantage. The
Pilots, despite being 4th in their own league, remain one of the State’s
best in D-V. Behind Ian Mason they took first in a combined D-4 & D-5
race at Mt. SAC. Their team time of 92:33, although not scintillating,
is enough to propel them to #7 in the State rankings. Piedmont has
earned #8 in the State rankings in D-4, and will have to tussle with
St. mary’s there again. St. Mary’s went off to Mt. SAC as well, and
came back with a nice 6th in the D-4 team sweepstakes race with a 85:35
team time. If things go to course, Piedmont will pull off its patented
late-seaon surge and win the ACCAL and take that momentum to NCS and
hoefully stave off St. Mary’s once again.

Girls: St. Mary’s has been able to keep Piedmont at bay so far this
season, although Piedmont did make it a one-point game in the last
center meet, with Alameda coming up to join the party another point
back. St. Mary’s is led by Bridget Duffy, a fne runner. Piedmont has
Mary Phelps, and Alameda has Corrine Roberts nd defending ACCAL champ
Sarah Walker. St. Mary’s did very well at Mt. SAC, taking 1st in a D-3
& D-4 combined regular varsity race. Duffy was the individual winner
and the Panthers took home first place medals with a team time of
107:57. St. Mary’s and Piedmont look to tussle again at MOC in D-4.

Bay Counties League:
Boys: Branson came with an eyelash of upsetting perennial BCL power
University last weekat Golden Gate Fields. If not for a late surge over
the last mile, the Red Devils would have suffered their first league
loss in over 5 years. Matt Marks of Branson bested Sean Drake of
University for the individual win. These two look to duke it out for top
honors at the league finals. Lick-Wilmerding and College Prep are very
close in strength and should have a good fight for 3rd in league.
University maed the trip to L.A. for the Mt. SAC meet and did well.
They nabbed 8th in the D-5 team sweepstakes race (team time 88:14), with
Drake at 8th individually. This puts them at 6th in the State rankings.

Girls: The BCL has some of the best D-5 runners in the state.
Universities Aliz Cohen has established herself with top credentials
this year, most recently being her 6th place (18:25) in the large
school team sweepstakes. Head Royce’s Clara Horowitz is also a talented
runner. Her Mt. SAC time in a D-5 race was also 18:25. Convent leads
off with Siobhan Uniacke and Mary McNabola, and they grabbed a 7th in
their D-5 Mt. SAC race (111:55). Lick Wilmerding has Lillian Gardiner
coming off a bout with mono, and is poised tangle with Convent over who
gets to finish behind University in the BCL champioships. All three are
State ranked: University #2, Lick #8, and Convent #9.

Bay Valley Athletic League:
Boys: De La Salle is again running rampant, but there is a bit of
resistance coming from Ygnacio Valley. The inerchangeable DLS bunch had
to work hard to beat Ygnacio and their group led by Anthony Lopez and
Abdullah Jamali, finally prevailing 25-32. DLS went off the Mt. SAC and
finished 9th in the team sweepstakes, but 1st overall in the D-2
standings. Their 80:58 is a fantastic team time by itself, and the rest
of the state has great teams as well. The Spartans are looking like a
team peaking well for their race against top-ranked Eureka at MOC. DLS
retains it s #2 State ranking. Ygnacio is also coming along well, and
is the prime candidate to knock off Mission for the top spot in D-1 at
MOC. College Park is also in the picture with a great grouping, but
will have to move up to challenge Ygnacio and the rest at MOC. The
Falcons are currently in 3rd in the BVAL.

Girls: The Antioch girls continue to hold sway here, as they
methodically step through the league schedule knocking off College Park,
Clayton Valley and finally Carondelet. The Panthers deserve their #4
State Ranking. Janie Nolan continues to lead this group. Carondelet
had to hang on for dear life to beat an inspired College Park crew
27-29, as the Falcons managed to put 3 in front of 2 to scare the
Cougars. Ashley Allen and Erin Gerdts lead Cllege Park. Jennifer
Randazzo and the bunch recouped to do very well at Mt. SAC, running an
inspired 2nd in the D-3 sweepstakes to Granda’s 1st. With a team time
of 99:58, the Cougars are well on their way to a top state meet
finish. Clayton Valley is certainly holding its own in 3rd in a
strong league. They were able to snag 4th in a D-2 race at Mt. SAC
(105:45).

Coastal Mountain Conference
Boys: Niko Savarese and Danny Blake of Willits have gone 1-2 on the
rest of the league in dual meet action. About the only team to put up
serious resistance was Kelseyville last week behind their own fine
runner Elliot Moffat and they came up short 23-33. The battle here is
for second between Kelseyville and Clear Lake.

Girls: The picture here is muddled, as several girls teams appear to
fluctuate between having and not having complete squads. The real power
seems to reside in Lower Lake, led by Cassandra Nowinsky. The other top
runner appears to be St. Vincent’s Mary Veger.

East Bay Athletic League:
Boys: Granada is definitely the power here. Amador chased them well in
a dual, but succumbed to superior forces. Chris Eggers, Justin Rau and
Robbie Boyle lead the Matadors. Thier Mt. SAC trip was worth it, as
they finished 5th in the D-3 sweepstakes race. They were 1 place behind
nemesis Redwood, but recorded a fine 82:19 team time. They currently
enjoy a # 5 state ranking in D-3. Amador Valley counters with DJ
Chapman and Jason Oswalt. The Dons also went to Mt. SAC and ran
decently, placing 16th in the Individual Sweepstakes large schools race
wtih a team time of 85:23. San Ramon, led by Chris Perry, also tried to
make a strong run at Granada, but the Mats went 1-2-3 on them and that
was that. The Wolves placed 8th in a regular D 2 race with a 91:16 team
time. Monte Vist in the same rce was 10th (92:32).

Girls: Granada is the clear power here. Their runaway win over
Carondelet in the Mt. SAC D-3 Sweepstakes race showed that they can
deliver under pressure. With Julia Fischer (6th-19:13), Sarah Alei
(8th-19:24) and Lisa Crampton (9th-19:28) the Mats have tremendous
upfront grouping. Their 98:12 team time is also very impressive,
comperable to the top times in the large schools sweepstakes. The Dons
took care of business in the EBAL, dispatching of rivals Amador, Monte
Vista and Livermore handily in dual action. Livermore improved in a
hurry with their 4th place finish in the large schools individual
sweepsakes at Mt. SAC. Dyani Jones (17th-19:26)led the Cowboys to a fine
102:40 team time. Monte Vista, with Susan Chan winning her regular D-2
race in 19:09, finished third in that Mt. SAC race with a 109:07 team
time. San Ramon ran incomplete, but Katie Lee and Katie Murphy went 1-3
(19:25 and 19:36).

Hayward Area Athletic League:
Boys: San Leandro ran away from Castro Valley in the league dual
showdown. Even with Zach Ardell-Smith nursing a tweaked ankle, the
Pirates had Efeson Yosief and Luke Sigmon go 1-2 on the Trojans and then
out group the rest of the race. SAn Leandro had a solid but uninspired
Mt. SAC race in the large schools individual sweepstakes. Yosief took
7th in fine 15:34, but the team only mustered an 86:04 team time
overall. Castro Valley did well in a regular D-1 race, grabbing a team
3rd behid the 1-3 finishes of Alex Cardiasmenos (16:09) and Beau
Bettinger (16:15). The Trojans had a 85:04 team time. Moreau Catholic
runs behind the formidable talents of Chris Lanese. He ran 15:30 for
3rd in the D-3 sweepstakes race, and the Mariners checked in with a
85:12 team time. Arroyo freshman Sung-Young Leal has shown no lack of
boldness as he has challenged each of the veteran speedsters in the
league during the dual season and only falling a step off in each race.

Girls: Bishop O’Dowd continues to flex their #8 D-4 ranking, running
with a great pack led by soph Danila Musante. The Dragons were 7th at
Mt. SAC in the D-4 sweepstakes race, wih Musante 7th in 19:35. Their
team time was 105:28. Cstro Valley, smarting from a 3 point loss to
O’Dowd, ran to a 3rd place in a regular D-1 race. Courtney Stewart won
taht race in 19:25, and the Trojans had a 107:29 team time. Hayward,
with defending Larisa Solozhuk coming back into shape, edged Moreau
Catholic by a point the battle for 3rd place. Moreau Catholic ran 12th
in the D-4 sweepstakes race at Mt. SAC, with Amber Hendrix 10th in
19:44. Their team time was 108:00.

Humboldt-Del Norte League:
Boys: The Eureka team is the class act here. They have not emerged
from their hinterland remoteness since Stanford, but that was enough to
open some eyes seriously around the state, earnning them a #1 state
ranking in D-2. The Loggers have been beating up pretty badly on the
rest of the league in dual action since. Lehrin Morey, Shaun Lyle, Dale
Kitt, Travis Moe, and Chris Binschus are their top pack, with another
half dozen just steps behind. Arcata is doing its best to stay the next
best team, and has traveled to Oregon to win two small invitationals
there, as well as the Ft. Bragg Invitational, but the Tigers are hard ut
to even crak the Euteka top 5. Adam Foote and Neil Klein are the top r
unners for Arcata. South Fork’s Roger Heath may be the best non-Eureka
runner in the league.

Girls: Arcata seems ready to reclaim the title that Eureka grabbed
from them last year. Maya Kessler is having a fine year so far, winning
at will in league meets. The Tigers have sept through the league, and
added the Ft. Bragg Invitational title to ther resume. Del Norte’s
Tiffany Vickers, last year’s league champ, is comng off an injury and it
remains to be seen if she can get back to form quickly. Eureka, having
problems fielding a complete team consistently, is led by the very
consistent Andrea Woodcock.

Marin County Athletic League
Boys: Redwood is having its way again with the league. The Giants have
been unpressed in any league dual meets, and have to foray outside the
insular Marin County confines to test themselves. At Mt. SAC, they ran
to a fine 4th in the very competitive D-4 seepstakes race (only 1 point
out of 3rd, 13 points out of 2nd) and ran to an excellent team time of
81:25. Chris Johnson and Darren Nee continue to lead the team. They
are currently #4 in the state D-4 rankings. Drake appeaars reay to
break out of the rest of the pack to be a solid second at the league
meet.

Girls: The Novato team looks strong this year, with Eva Gut leading
the Hornets. They had been relatively untested in league action, until
an injury along with an inspired Tamalpais team dropped Novato into a
tie with Drake for the league dual title.

Mission Valley Athletic League:
Boys: Mission is the power here. They are on track for their umpteenth
lague title behind the front-running of Micah Storm. At Mt. SAC the
Warriors took 9th in the large school individual sweepstakes race with a
team time of 84:06. Strom ran 16:17 in 29th. James Logan has Jason
Castro up front. The picture in the league is murky, with little or no
information seeping out, so I haveno clear idea of how the rest of the
league pans out.

Girls: Again, the story is apparently all Mission. Their Mt.SAC trip
resulted in a 7th place in a regular D-1 race with a team time of
104:07. It is unclear which girl was the top runner for the Warriors,
Hagu Solomon or Jamie Mangiardi, but whichever it was ran 19:38. The
rest of the league is obscured in no-information land, so I don’t know
the othe individuals or other program strengths.

North Bay League:
Boys: Ukiah swooped down to best Montgomery to claim league
supremacy. The reclusive Wildcats were able to go 1-2 on the Vikings and
then held it up through the pack. Santa Rosa squeaked by Maria Carrillo
in the battle for third place. The top runner in the league appears to
be Jordan Kinley of Maria Carrillo. The Montgomery boys traveled to
Mt. SAC and and finished 2nd in a regular D-1 race with a team time of
85:08. Jon Fitch was their lead runner at 15th, 16:25.

Girls: Montgomery was able to hold off Santa Rosa in the race for the
league lead. Sara Bei continues to be impressive as she runs to what
many believe will be a national title at season’s end. In any case, she
cruised to a comfortable Mt. SAC win with ease, equaling her time from
last year. The Vikings took 7th in the individual sweepstakes race,
with a great team time of 101:20. The supporting cast of Bashel,
Pederson, and Terabilini fell a bit off the pace. The Viings are rankd
# 7 in the state in D-2. The dual meet race with Santa Rosa was a case
of holding off the injured reserve ward the Santa Rosa team has become.
Loaded with potential, the Panthers have been unable to field a full 5
healthy uninjured girls in any one race. Their Mt. SAC race was a
disappointment, as they ran17th in a regular D-1 race, with a team time
of 109:19. Whether they can regroup for the end of the season remains
to be seen. Maria Cariilo’s fine tandem of Jenny Aldridge and Ashlee
Drady continue to run in the top portion of races.

Sonoma County League:
Boys: Petaluma seems to be in the driver’s seat for the team title.
Holdren (no first name available) has been their leader this season.
Analy should give them a run at the end, as they have been walloping
opponents their last few races. Individually Nate Kabanuk of Casa
Grande has been dominating the league this season. However, Windor’s
Emmanuel Vasquez has gotten his visa problems cleared up and is now
eligible to run. Those two should have a real tussle when they match up
at the league meet.

Girls: Defending chapion Laurel Wiel of El Molino has been out with an
injury for most of the season but rumor has that she will be returning
soon. This year the league has pretty much belonged to Elissa Briggs
of Analy, who has been the lead runner for a great pack that includes
Julia Beers and Ashley Reiter. Then last week, after the league soccer
season ended, Healdsburg inherited frosh Kelly Rogers who beat Briggs by
almost two minutes. Anomaly or phenom? We’ll all find out in the next
round of races. The team picture is clearly Analy, with the real races
between Sonoma and Petaluma for 2nd.

Tri-County League
Boys: Dublin is the clear power here . The defending team champions
have gotten stronger. The Gaels have rampaged unimpeded through the
league this year behind the runingof the Gomez brothers marcos and
Francisco. AT Mt. SAC, they took 4th in the D-4 sweepstakes race
(defending state champ Nordhoff was third) with a team time of 83:31.
Campolindo appears to be the best in the race for 2nd. The Cougars ran
2nd in their regurlar D-4 race at Mt. SAC with a team time of 88:43.
Dublin and Campolindo are ranked #8 and #10 state wide in D-4. Jake
Chang and Jon Ide-Don led the Cougar chaarge. Individually, Ryan Mc
Ginnis has handled theopposition well and is the league favorite.

Girls: Campo took the measure of Miramonte earlier this year in a
strong dual meet, and Miramonte looks to reverse that outcome at the
league meet. The Cougars lead off with Karen Lee and Christine Atkins.
At Mt. SAC, Campolindo ran an impressive 2nd in the D-4 sweepstakes and
recorded a team time of 102:25. Campo and Miramonte are ranked # 3 and
# 7 in the state in D-4. Miramonte is led by Amanda Brecht. Alhambra’s
duo of Amy Loper-Riley (although out with an injury) and Jessica Neu are
the best individuals in the league, and as a team the Bulldogs will try
to surprise the other two. Alhambra ran 9th in the D-4 sweepstakes race
at Mt. SAC with a team time of 107:04.
