Sara Gorton - Mountain Pointe and Juan Reyes - Carl Hayden both win 5A
individual titles in record time. With temperatures in the 90's and 7
athletes needing medical treatment, the heat did not slow Gorton 18:29 over
3.1 mile course or Reyes 15:46.
The two seniors took control at the beginning of the race and looked
impressive as Gorton won by 37 seconds and Reyes winning by 27 seconds.
The girls of Glendale Mountain Ridge 49 points, boys of Horizon 51 points won
the team titles.

Closing her high school cross country competition, Sarah Gorton, Phoenix
Mountain Pointe, raced to a course record and beat the nearest competitor by
37 seconds at the Freestone Regional Park in Gilbert, AZ. She covered the
3.1 mile course in 18:29. No one was in view as she finished the race.
Later in the afternoon, Juan Reyes, Phoenix Carl Hayden, also a senior,
repeated as expected by demolishing his competition with a 15:45 run that
beat his own course record from 1998. His margin of victory was also 27
seconds. Gorton and Reyes are both outstanding academic achievers and are
both the subjects of intense recruiting. Gorton reportedlly is considering
UCLA, Stanford, Colorado, and Arizona State. Reyes has not revealed his
college interests yet.
