Golden West Invitational

Boys-Once again the best in the Nation will descend upon Sacramento to
decide who is the best in the County. No Heats-just a one shot "go for
broke" format. With the California State Meet, The GWI and next year's
Olympic Trials-Sacramento Lays claim as the "Track Capital of the Country".
100 Meters-Texas Olan Coleman (10.39) headlines the field, although he is
expected to face stiff challenges form Southern California's Warren Rogers
(10.42), Mississippi's Greg Carter-who is undefeated in two years and
Florida 6A champion Luther Huggins.
200 Meters-This race will feature one of the GWI's strongest fields as
Coleman (20.87),Rogers (20.88),Mitchell (20.98) and Huggins (21.13) will
collide with defending Medalist Kevin Baker from Texas.
400 Meters-Baker will return to defend his title, but should get all he can
handle from Washington Tahvio Gratton and 3 time Oklahoma State Champion
Josh Landreth and California's Giovanni Miles and possibly Mike Mitchell.
800 Meters-Ali Abiola from New York (1:51.15 in last years GWI) will be
challenged by Texan's Joe Vaughn (1:51.27) and Daniel Pessing.
Mile-Massachusett's Andy Powell- far and away the National Leader with his
4:02.7 will seek to become the first High Schooler in 30 years to crack the
4 minute barrier. Powell  will face a field that includes New Jersey's Jon
Fasulo, Idaho's Gene Betancourt, Oregon's Steve Laughlin, California's
Justin Willingham and Montana's Scott McGowan (who broke a 37 yr old State
Record.)
3,200-In a word "Awesome", Southern Callifornia rising stars Augie Escobar
(8:56.23) & Josh Spiker (8:56.66), Arcadia Champion Adam Tenforde
(8:57.19),Penn Relays Champion Murad Cambpell (8:58.30),Massachusetts star
Franklyn Sanchez (8:49.60 for two miles indoors-9:03.50 outdoors)'98
All-American
Josh Rohatinsky,Illinois's Don Sage (9:02.78),Idaho Champion Jed Barta
(9:06.58)& Arizonan Juan Reyes make for an incredible field. Lingel thinks
half a dozen could go under 9:00 with sub 8:50 a real possibility.
High Hurdles-Colorado All-American Ricardo Moody (13.67 in winning at
Arcadia) will clash with Texan's Reggie Harrell (13.68) & Mickey Peters
(13.82), Illinois Kyle Erickson (13.82) & California's Charles Ryan (13.88).
300 Hurdles-Two of the top Three in the country will face off as Texas
Adrian Mayes (36.68) will square off with Florida Oneill Wright (36.84),
Indiana's Daniel Martin (37.49) and Erickson (36.78 ) will likely challenge
as well.
Long Jump-Texan's Tommy Oleksy (25'0 1/2), Nakia Williams (24'11 1/2) and
George Sheppard (24'7 1/2) head the field and the Nation. Missouri's Brandon
Lloyd (25'0 1/2w) may try to break up the Texas Trio.
Shot Put-Missouri's Arley Smith (65'8 3/4) #2 in the Nation is the feature
competitor here. A plethora of 60 foot plus throwers will be on hand to
challenge him
Javelin-From the flat lands of Kansas Gary File (240'1) will defend his
national lead, his toughest competition will likely come from fellow Kansan
Zach Josephson & Pennysylvania's Matt Deamer (216'3).
Pole Vault-Texan Charlie Cosky (16'10) will attempt to break through the 17
foot barrier. Other top competitors include Washington's Tim Morse & Jared
Drake and California's Sam Boswell.
High Jump-National Co-Leader Matt Vincent (7'2) from Florida will be
challenged by Texas's Michael Beasley (7'1 1/2), Washington 7 footers Casey
Clark & Matt Alverson and possibly Texan Paul Todd (7'1) and Missouri's
Lloyd (7'1).
Discus-Missouri's Russ Bell (202'11) and probably California's Lucais McKay
(202'3)
should give the GWI another of it's traditional 200 foot battles. Texas
Jason Young (197'10) and Illinois Mike Minton (192'1) lie in wait.
Triple Jump-50 footers abound as Kentucky All-American Jason Ward leads the
field.
Washington's Wesley Nurse (50'01/2), Texas Brandel Lawrence (50'9) and
possibly Andrew Poole (50'9 1/4), and Louisiana's Traun Smith (50'2 1/4) &
Richard Smith (50'3 1/2) should make for a great competition.
Hammer-North American Leader Dylan Armstrong (251'3) arrives frrom British
Columbia and will be pushed in all likelihood by Lucais MacKay (217'10).
Girls
With the awesome strength of the girls programs in California it's no wonder
how
strong this years GWI will be.
100-California's Sani Roseby (11.50), probably Tania Woods (11.56),
Colorado's Alexis Joyce (defending her crown) and Missouri's Muna Lee will
headline a great field.
200-San Diego will send Monique Henderson (23.38w), who is laying claim to
the best 200-400 combination sprinter in a long time, Monique will face off
with Illinois Adia McKinnon (23.89) and possibly Woods (23.62) and Joyce
(23.48w).
400-Henderson (52.91) will collide with '98 world junior runnerup Nakiya
Johnson (53.02-52.09 in 98), McKinnon (53.93) & Mississippi's Christy
Fairley (54.34) in what should be one of the best competitions of the
evening.
800-National Leader Lindsay Hyatt (2:07.29),will face an incredible field as
she will
deal with 98 All-American Jen Vendetti (2:09.45-98), Katie Hotchkiss
(2:10.91) & Eri McDonald (2:09.95 -98). Everyone in the field has cracked
the 2:13 barrier.
Mile-Californian Alejandro Barrientos (4:47.94) will face off with Kansas's
Amy Mortimer (4:48.2) to decide who's #1 in the country-neither can afford a
slip-up as Sara Bei (4:52.28);Tera Moody (4:52.8) and Oregonion Amy
Nickerson (4:34.3-1500) lie in wait.
3200-McDonald's teammate Victoria Chang from Hawaii will be challenged by
California's Bei, New York's Jill Mastroianni and Virginia's Liz Awtrey.
This will be another race that stands out as special.

100 Hurdles-A dream field-with California's Nicole Denby (13.54w) facing the
likes of
Oklahoma's Emily Waibel (13.71w);Texas Relays Champion Zamyal Jackson
(13.88w),Texan Ranysha LeBlanc (13.99);and Arizona co-state champion Seneca
Holmes (13.97), with the possibility of Florida's Jerkita McClorin (13.65)
joining the field to complete the dream.
300 Hurdles-Another outstanding field headed by Texas 4A Champion LeBlanc
(41.20), colliding with Denby (42.08), possibly Florida star Tareal Lurry
(42.10) and Colorado's Beau Walker (42.60).
Long Jump-It looks like it will take a jump past 20 feet to claim the title.
Kansan Angel Heath, will collide with Texas Jamey Walker and California's
Sani Roseby. Both Heath and Walker have spanned 19'11.
Shot Put- Local girl Jill Camarena (49'11) will face an outstanding
contingent. North Dakota's Briona Reynolds (47'7) and Pennsylvania's Eleise
Mitchell (47'3 3/4) are most likely to challenge Camarena.
Javelin-The top three throwers in the  county will face off as Oregonion's
Katy Polansky (170'8) and Sarah Malone (162'5) will be challenged by
Pennsylvania's Inge Jorgensen (161'10).
Pole Vault-6 Twelve footers have been invited with 5 confirmed headed by
National Leader Kathleen Donoghue (12'8), Easterner's Michelle Kercado (12'6
1/4) and Lauren Contursi (12'0), Montana's Leila Ben-Youssef (12'1) and
California's Natalie Dennison & Leora Ward headline this outstanding
contingent.
High Jump-Two 6 footers in Texan Kim Riley & Pennsylvania's Hyleas Fountain
(competing unattached) will lead the field. Arizonan Jodi Smith &
California's Julie Stevenson & Annmarie Turpin have all cleared 5'10.
Discus-The top 3 throwers in the country will square off with North Dakota's
Reynolds (174'0);Wisconsin's Pedretti (172'1) & Washington's Mary Etter
(168'6) competing. Californian April Burton can never be counted out.
Triple Jump-If Florida's Antoninette Wilks (40'9) can make it she will
strenghten this field if she can make it , as will Texan LaVada Hill (42'2)
otherwise the favorite will be
local girl Lauren Chestnut.
Hammer-As in the Boys Competition British Columbia will contribute the North
American leader, this time in Carol Stevenson. Oregon's Dominque Green and
California's Shannon Daniels.
In Closing Lingel noted that the 40th edition of the GWI will once again be
the Premier High School meet in the country. GWI officials also announced
that Distance Great Alberto Salazar had been confirmed as the guest speaker
for there Banquet on the night prior to the meet.
