World Youth - Men's Summary

by Doug Speck and Mike Kennedy

Brian Sears

Joshua Walker

100 Meters
(Semi #1)
1. BRYAN SEARS (USA) 10.47 (wind +0.9).
Bryan Sears (Georgia) - "That was my fastest time ever. I felt it was my best
race ever. My legs felt kind of tired out of the blocks, and I had to catch up
in this race. I hope to get a good start in the Finals and run 10.3 or 10.2."

(Finals)
1. Mark Lewis-Francis (Great Britain) 10.40 (+1.4), 2. BRYAN SEARS (USA) 10.42.
Bryan Sears (Georgia) - (Sears was very emotional after the 100 final, sitting
in the athlete's changing area of the bleachers with his head in his hands for
a long time. He was obviously very upset at not winning, and was not really
able to discuss the race as he headed for the doping area. He was a matter of
inches from being the World Youth Champion.)

400 Meters
(Heat #1)
1. IVORY MCCANN (USA) 48.17.
McCann looked very controlled in winning this heat by .26 seconds ovder Claudel
Garzon Dutel of Cuba.
Ivory McCann (Texas) - "I felt good and the heat was nothing special. I hoped
to do pretty god and wanted to qualify here in the low 48's or high 47's. I
hope to run in the top three in the semi's and make the Finals. I probably
will have to run in the 47's there, with I hope 46's or high 45's in the
finals. I am a student at Forest Brook HS in Houston, and will be in the
eleventh grade next year. I had to sit out this year after trasnferring."
Heat #6
1. William Mandla Nkosi (Republic of South Africa) 47.47....3. TRAVON WALTON
(USA) 48.34 (non-qualifer)
Travon Walton (California) - "I felt sluggish. For the past week and a half my
coach has been gone to Europe and I think I have not had hard enough workouts.
My goal was to run in the 47's here in the heats, and think I only ran about
48.3. I am on the medley relay and we hope to medal in that event."

1500 Meters
(Heat #1)
1. Michael Too (Algeria) 3:56.63.......11. NICK SCHNEIDER (USA) 4:02.60 (non-
qualifer)
Nick Schneider (Minnesota) - "I felt all-right in the race and was pleased with
my effort. I ran 4:18 this spring for 1600 Meters for Benilde St. Margaret HS
of St. Louis Park, Minnesota and finished fourth in the State Meet over 1600
metes. I think this was a good experience. The athletes here run different
than in the U.S. They started very easy, and then finished very hard. The
race was very physical and I was knocked around a couple of times. I will be
in the eleventh grade next year."
(Heat #2)
1. Cornelius Chirchir (Kenya) 3:48.66.........8. JARED SCOTT (USA) 3:58.86
(non-qualifier)
Jared Scott (Colorado) - I felt good and the race felt very fast! (1:57 for
leaders at 800m). I tried my best to stay up. I ran 4:00 for 1500 meters at
the Youth Nationals in Edwardsville, Illinois for my best race this year. I
will be a senior at Lewis Palmer HS in Monument, Colorado. This was a fun
experience, and I found out that there is always someone out there better than
you are.

3000 Meters
1. Pius Muuli (Kenya) 8:08.16 (final 400m was 53.7, final 200 25
point).........24. CHRISTOPHER CLANCY (USA) 8:59.27.
Chris Clancy (Oregon) - "I had a side ache during the race. The pace was fast
(he came by 1600 meters at 4:29), but I felt that I had to go with them. The
pace did hit me after four laps. I think I found out that I am a bit slower
than I thought I was when compared to the rest of the world. I think I will go
back and train harder now. I go to Marshall HS in Portland, Oregon and will
be a senior next year. I ran 8:42 as a soph for 3000 meters, then 8:52 this
spring. I have also run 3:59 for 1500 meters."

110 Meters
(Finals)
1. Ladji Doucoure (France) 13.27 (+0.8)...5. JOSHUA WALKER (USA) 13.84.
Joshua Walker (Georgia) - "I felt very good in the Finals! This was the best
race of my life. I was out good and finished strong! I know that I am not
meant to win everytime and that my time will come down the road. My previous
best time was 13.96. This was a great oportunity to represent our nation and I
realize that many good athletes did not have the chance that I did. This was
just my second year of running the hurdles"

Pole Vault
(Qualifying) 1. Sebastien Homo (France) 4.75 (15-07)....11. PAUL GENSIC (USA)
4.60 (15-01) (qualifies or field of 12 final).....20. SAGE THAMES (USA) 4.40
(14-05.25 (non qualifier)
