Men 100 Meters (Semi #1) 1. BRYAN SEARS (USA) 10.47 (wind +0.9). Bryan Sears
(Georgia) - "That was my fastest time ever. I felt it was my best race
ever. My legs felt kind of tired out of the blocks, and I had to catch up in
this race. I hope to get a good start in the Finals and run 10.3 or 10.2."
(Finals) 1. Mark Lewis-Francis (Great Britain) 10.40 (+1.4), 2. BRYAN SEARS
(USA) 10.42. Bryan Sears (Georgia) - (Sears was very emotional after the 100
final, sitting in the athlete's changing area of the bleachers with his head in
his hands for a long time. He was obviously very upset at not winning, and was
not really able to discuss the race as he headed for the doping area. He was a
matter of inches from being the World Youth Champion.)
400 Meters (Heat #1) 1. IVORY MCCANN (USA) 48.17. McCann looked very
controlled in winning this heat by .26 seconds ovder Claudel Garzon Dutel of
Cuba. Ivory McCann (Texas) - "I felt good and the heat was nothing special.
I hoped to do pretty god and wanted to qualify here in the low 48's or high
47's. I hope to run in the top three in the semi's and make the Finals. I
probably will have to run in the 47's there, with I hope 46's or high 45's in
the finals. I am a student at Forest Brook HS in Houston, and will be in the
eleventh grade next year. I had to sit out this year after trasnferring."
Heat #6 1. William Mandla Nkosi (Republic of South Africa) 47.47....3. TRAVON
WALTON (USA) 48.34 (non-qualifer) Travon Walton (California) - "I felt
sluggish. For the past week and a half my coach has been gone to Europe and I
think I have not had hard enough workouts. My goal was to run in the 47's here
in the heats, and think I only ran about 48.3. I am on the medley relay and we
hope to medal in that event."
1500 Meters (Heat #1) 1. Michael Too (Algeria) 3:56.63.......11. NICK
SCHNEIDER (USA) 4:02.60 (non- qualifer) Nick Schneider (Minnesota) - "I
felt all-right in the race and was pleased with my effort. I ran 4:18 this
spring for 1600 Meters for Benilde St. Margaret HS of St. Louis Park, Minnesota
and finished fourth in the State Meet over 1600 metes. I think this was a good
experience. The athletes here run different than in the U.S. They started very
easy, and then finished very hard. The race was very physical and I was knocked
around a couple of times. I will be in the eleventh grade next year." (Heat
#2) 1. Cornelius Chirchir (Kenya) 3:48.66.........8. JARED SCOTT (USA) 3:58.86
(non-qualifier) Jared Scott (Colorado) - I felt good and the race felt very
fast! (1:57 for leaders at 800m). I tried my best to stay up. I ran 4:00 for
1500 meters at the Youth Nationals in Edwardsville, Illinois for my best race
this year. I will be a senior at Lewis Palmer HS in Monument, Colorado. This was
a fun experience, and I found out that there is always someone out there better
than you are.
3000 Meters 1. Pius Muuli (Kenya) 8:08.16 (final 400m was 53.7, final 200 25
point).........24. CHRISTOPHER CLANCY (USA) 8:59.27. Chris Clancy (Oregon) -
"I had a side ache during the race. The pace was fast (he came by 1600
meters at 4:29), but I felt that I had to go with them. The pace did hit me
after four laps. I think I found out that I am a bit slower than I thought I was
when compared to the rest of the world. I think I will go back and train harder
now. I go to Marshall HS in Portland, Oregon and will be a senior next year. I
ran 8:42 as a soph for 3000 meters, then 8:52 this spring. I have also run 3:59
for 1500 meters."
110 Meters (Finals) 1. Ladji Doucoure (France) 13.27 (+0.8)...5. JOSHUA
WALKER (USA) 13.84. Joshua Walker (Georgia) - "I felt very good in the
Finals! This was the best race of my life. I was out good and finished strong! I
know that I am not meant to win everytime and that my time will come down the
road. My previous best time was 13.96. This was a great oportunity to represent
our nation and I realize that many good athletes did not have the chance that I
did. This was just my second year of running the hurdles"

Women 100 Meters (Semi-Finals) (Semi #1) 1. LASHAUNTEA MOORE (USA) 11.74
(+0.5 mps). (Moore gave up at least three meters through the first half of the
race before starting a charge that had her rocket up to, then over the final 15
meters shoot past leader Donna Maylor of Great Britain) (Semi #2 was won by Lisa
Sharpe (Jamaica) at 11.78 (wind -1.3) and Semi #3 had Veronica Campbell
(Jamaica) at 11.59 (-0.3)--the Finals will be a great race) Lashauntea Moore
(Ohio) - "I am shocked! I did not run that good all spring, never under
12.00. I have been training hard on my turnover this summer and it is working. I
thought I had a pretty good start, when I found myself a few meters down I
realized that I had to catch her. (When asked what she thought about when she
made her move) I relaxed when I wanted to make my move and it worked."
(Moore is a great personality, quick with a smile). (Finals) 1. Veronica
Campbell (Jamaica) 11,48 (+0.6)...4. LASHUNTREA MOORE (USA) 11.66 (pr)
Lashauntea Moore (Ohio) - "I felt that I ran okay in the Finals. The two
false starts kind of broke my concenration. I was behind once again after not
having a real good start. I felt I just had more acceleration left in my
semi-finals win. I was not just focused the way that I wished to be."
400 Meters (Heat 1) 1. Helen Okpanachi (Nigeria) 53.24......5. CHRISTY
FAIRLEY (USA) 56.27. Christy Fairley (Mississippi) - "I felt I tensed up a
bit at the end. I felt I did good to get here and run against all of these
people from other countries. I wanted to PR in this meet and I think I did here
in my heat. I am the State 400 Champ from George County High School in Lucedale,
Mississippi and will be in the eleventh grade next year." (Heat 4) 1.
MONIQUE HENDERSON (USA) 53.47. Monique Henderson (California) - "I felt
good and the race went as expected. My goal was to win my heat, with my overall
goal to win the event final without worrying about the time. (When asked about
feeling any pressure as one of the headlined athletes in the meet) I alays feel
a certain amount of pressure, with this meet being quite different in that none
of us really know what to expect.
800 Meters Heat #2 1. Esther Desviat (Spain) 2:09.80....5. ROBIN MORTEL (USA)
2:12.86. Mortel was an early leader at the 200 in 30.3, then a group took over
ahead of her. She did challenge for places through the finish of her event.
Mortel was a late add, not being on the official meet heat sheets handed out the
morning of the event.
1500 Meters
Heat 2 1. Moerenet Gerbay (Ethiopia) 4:27.25......12. JENNY LIOU (USA)
5:02.42. (Non- qualifer) Jenny Liou (Idaho) "I was not event winded at the
finish. For some reason my legs have been cramping up this week. I have
stretched, drank a lot of water, and had a leg massage. My goal certainly was to
not finish last in my heat! I will be a senior next year at Moscow HS in Idaho.
I was the State 800 meter champ this spring, and also placed in the 1600 and
3200 in that meet and ran on our 4x400 relay. Among the schools I am considering
after I graduate from high school are Oregon, Stanford, and Villanova"
