Doug Speck sent interview questions by email to American athletes heading
for Poland.
1) Your Name Sage Thames
2) The School you attend (also its city and your state) and if you run for a
club in the summer what is the
name of the club? ? Friendship High, in Wolfforth, Texas
3) What grade are you in? I will be a Junior (11)
4) Briefly summarize your 1999 Track and Field Year so far-- I was injured
after the second meet of the
season, came back at district and somehow qualified for regional, Won
regional, and than won the state 4a
pole vault (new 4a state record 16' 7") Then I went to the foot locker
outdoor championships and placed
third with 15'11".
5) What are your lifetime bests in your event or events (if you compete in
more than one)? 16' 7" in the
pole vault
6) What are your thoughts as you head to the World Youth Meet in Poland next
week? I am very excited
about my chance to vault in Poland at the Youth Worlds.
7) What do you enjoy most about Track and Field? The camaraderie between the
athletes, it's like no other
sport.
8) Do you have any interesting stories or incidents about your involvement
with Track and Field? Any
relatives of note in sports? Awards in Other Sports or Academics? My father
pole vaulted at SMU, Teb
Thames. I am a A honor roll student, and have recieved National Merit awards
in Math and Science. I have
also been inducted in Who's Who among American High School Students.
9) Have you done anything different this year in your preparation because of
your membership on the
World Championship Youth Team? Not really, I have just kept training as usual.
10) What tips could you offer other young athletes just beginning in the
sport of Track and Field? Stay
focused and dedicated. Also, just because it is not really a "main stream
sport" in America do not let that
bring you down, let it push you to do your best for yourself, and the sport
of Track and Field in general.
