1. Emily Ann Duran
2. Nebraska City High School Nebraska City, Ne. My coach is Lou
Varley. I am with the Lincoln Supersonics in Lincoln, Ne. My Dad takes
me to practice there when we can, ohter wise my Dad and brother have
helped me in the summertime right here in town.
3. I am going into the 12th grade.
4. I have been on varisty track since I was a freshman and have the
school record for the shot and discus. This year I got first place in
both shot and discus in class B. I have competed in the Footlocker
Scholastic Championships in Raleigh, N. C. Age Nationals in
Edwardsvile,Ill. have qualified for National Jr Oly. in Omaha later this
month. I am going to Poland and am going to State Games of America in
St. Louis in Aug. Every weekend in between I have competed in smaller
meets around the state.
5. This summer I have improved a lot. My pb in shot is 46'6'' which I
threw at Omaha Burke,June 19 to qualify for Nationals. My pb in discus
is 159'3'' this past weekend at Omaha Millard West. Boy, was I
surprised. I hadn't thrown anything over 150'8'' except in practice.
6. I am looking forward to going to Poland but I will admit I am a
little nervous competing with 131 other countries. This will be the
first time I will throw without my parents being there. I will try to do
my best to represent the United States.
7. I like track because I get to meet so many nice kids and being
outside. Knowing that I am pretty good at it too.
8. I don't have one certain story. Just sometimes I even amaze myself by
winning. I have always been competing with older girls and this year I
will be the older girl. My brother was a two time state champ in
wresting in high school. I have several awards in fast pitch softball
and power lifting. I have received the girls outstanding female atlete
of year award the last two years. I am number 40/120 in my class. I
have a grade point average of 3.41 and have been on the honor roll for
the last three years. I have received several academic letters.
9. About the only thing I have changed this summer is going to the spin
in shot and not doing the glide.
10. I would say that shot and discus is not an easy sport. Some say it
is only for boys but us young ladies are getting greater every year.
Hang in there and keep lifting those weights. Your hard work and
dedication will pay off sooner or later. I know.
