Quartet heavy on Texas talent finishes 2nd in sprint relay
WOMEN DASH TO 4X100 RELAY SILVER

BYDGOSZCZ, Poland, July 17, 1999 -- Three Texas prep teammates and a
Washingtonian teamed up to grab silver in the 4x100-meter relay on the second
day of the IAAF World Youth Track & Field Championships here Saturday.
The team of Ginnie Powell, Ashley Mitchell, Raasin McIntosh and
Stephanie Durst covered the track in 45.40 seconds to win silver, behind
Jamaica’s winning 44.30. Powell won four golds for Seattle’s Rainier Beach
High School at the Washington state meet this year, while Mitchell, McIntosh
and Durst made up three-quarters of Houston Westbury’s Texas state champion
4x100.
Other highlights on the track Saturday included impressive semifinal
wins in the 200 by men’s 100 silver medalist Bryan Sears of Hinesville, Ga.,
and LaShauntea Moore of Akron, Ohio. Moore blasted her previous personal
best, clocking 23.29 as the leading qualifier. Monique Henderson of Bonita,
Calif., and Ivory McCann of Houston were also the leading qualifiers for the
finals in the 400 meters.
Both American teams advanced to the final in the sprint medley relay,
with the women turning in the best time of the day. Mitchell and Durst teamed
up with Christy Fairley and Robin Mortel to cover the 1000-meter distance in
2:10.19.
Field events action was paced by Dan Taylor of Middlefield, Ohio, who
won his qualifying section in the discus with a 187-6 toss. Allen Simms of
Lanham, Md., was the top jumper of the day for the U.S., advancing to the
triple jump final with a 48-6.25 leap.

Men’s 200 semifinal: Leading qualifier - Timothy Benjamin (Britain), 20.98;
Bryan Sears (USA) won Heat 2 in 21.26 to advance to the final; Duriel Laird
(USA) was 7th in Heat 3 at 22.24 and did not advance.
Men’s 400 semifinal: Leading qualifier - Ivory McCann (USA), 47.60; Travon
Walton (USA) was 3rd in Heat 1 at 48.03 and advanced to the final.
Men’s 800 semifinal: Leading qualifier - Berhanu Alemu (Ethiopia), 1:50.06;
Clark Payne (USA) was 4th in Heat 1 at 1:56.82 and did not advance; Shannon
Hughes (USA) was 9th in Heat 4 at 2:02.78 and did not advance.
Men’s 400 Hurdles prelims: Leading qualifier - Sergio Castellano (Cuba),
50.91; Gerren Crochet (USA) was 2nd in Heat 4 at 53.64, but did not advance;
Brian Hickman (USA) was 2nd in Heat 2 at 54.01 and did not advance.
