1999 Junior Nationals

Men's 400M Hurdles

Pictures and commentary by Doug Speck

400 Meter Intermediate Hurdles Wow! Another hot event. Bayano Kimani had won the NCAA Championships for Baylor with an impressive 48.68! Preps James Graham and Rickey Harris were under 51.0 this season, with Graham the National Scholastic Outdoor winner (50.72) the previous week over Harris (50.63 earlier in the year at the Penn Relays), a Virginia eleventh grader. University of Tennessee's Hassan Stamps (51.95) took Heat 1, New York prep Bryan McCants Heat 2 (52.62), with Kamani 51.50 in winning the third prelim.

Kamani was off to an impressive start in the Finals, as he alternates masterfully over the early hurdles. Kamani totally clobbered hurdle number six so bad he nearly fell down, with others in the field, especially Harris back up into the race. Down the homestretch it was the surprising Virginia eleventh grader, Harris, who set a national soph record with his 51.62 run in this meet last year, edging past to establish a U.S. eleventh grade all-time best with his 50.28 win. When asked about his race afterwards, Harris replied that he has yet to run a 400 meter race where he feels good about his entire step pattern. With the all-time prep bests 49.8 hand and 50.02 auto-timed, those records certainly seem within reach for the latest fine star out of the Centreville, Virginia program.

Winner Rickey Harris
