Best States at Raleigh?
Texas boys and Virginia girls
Here is what happens if you score the Foot Locker National Outdoor
championships by state (8 places, 10-8-9-5-4-3-2-1):
BOYS: Texas rolls up 111.7 points to lead a pack of five strong
states.
GIRLS: Virginia wins a one-point squeaker over Ohio, 105-107.
Detailed state scoresheets: BOYS
- GIRLS
Texas boys were strong in sprints, relays, and pole vault as usual, but also
had good balance with points in 15 of 20 events. The Lone Star State had
to be good to stay ahead of powerful contingents from Virginia, New
Jersey, Maryland, and New York.
The Virginia and Ohio girls went head to head throughout with both scoring in
almost all events except the mile, 2-mile, and pole vault. They didn't
realize that the state "team title" was on the line in the closing
4x400 relay Saturday. Ohio led by one point going in. But VA Bethel
claimed second place for 8 points, while Ohio only got 6 points on Beaumont's
fourth place and Cleveland Collinwood's 8th place.
Twenty nine states scored at least one point in boys events and 28 states in
girls.
The points were scored using National Federation events plus the sprint and
medley relays, omitting the javelin, hammer, race walk, and steeplechase.
The latter events are not contested in the majority of states and would have
skewed the results in favor of the states who specialize in these
events. The notable state is Rhode Island, which would have scored
30 points in boys and 31 in girls if the hammer throw were included.
Also losing significant points were New York (race walk and steeplechase), Maine
(race walk), New Jersey (girls javelin), and Pennsylvania (girls javelin).
