| Jamaicans take top 2 spots, Americans next 2 in 4x400
qualifiers - Two Jamaican teams and two American teams were the top
qualifiers for the HS girls championship 4x400. The top four times in
39 heats were run by JAM Vere Technical 3:44.56, JAM St. Jago 3:44.83, PA
Simon Gratz 3:45.43, and VA Bethel 3:48.46.

Jennifer Donovan holds off Sheila Agrawal
in stirring 3000 Meters - Jennifer Donovan, NY Half Hollow
Hills, and Sheila Agrawal, MA Joseph Case, battled stride for
stride through the last two laps before Donovan prevailed in
9:42.41 to 9:43.86. It was a 3-girl race for five laps led by Liz
Reusser, WI Middleton, but first Donovan and then Agrawal passed
Reusser. Donovan on the inside was challenged repeatedly
by Agrawal on the outside, but refused to give up the lead.
Finally, on the last turn, Agrawal had no more surges left. Donovan
told the press: "That race was so tough I can't even
believe it. I totally wanted to give up but I figured it
was now or never."
New Yorker Jillian Mastroianni was thwarted in her bid to become the first runner to win this race three years in a row.

| Prendergast wins great DMR - With two lead changes in the last 200 meters,
a thrilling girls distance medley was won by PA Archbishop
Prendergast in 11:59.12. Prendy Sheila Klick anchored in
4:53.5. Saratoga Springs (12:01.98) led most of the race, but VA
Thomas Jefferson (12:00.27) anchor Kelly Otstott and Klick stalked
the leader through the 1600 meter leg. On the last lap,
both stepped it up on the backstretch and Otstott took the lead
on the far turn, only to have Klick take the last lead down the
home stretch. Klick was named the outstanding high school
female athlete in relays. |
| Stephanie Snyder wins Mile - Stephanie
Snyder, NJ Randolph, was an easy
winner of the girls mile in 4:53.43. (Note: this is a correction
from the track announced winner Sharon O'Connor.) (Thursday afternoon) |
| LaTanya Parker edges Eliese Mitchell by 1/2 inch in
girls SP - A half inch was all that separated the top two
in girls shot put, with LaTanya Parker, NY Newark, the winner at
45-11.75, and Eliese Mitchell, PA Garden Spot, second. |
| Jamaican Camille Robinson wins HJ in 5-6.5 - Five girls made the same height in high jump,
with Jamaican Camille Robinson, JAM Vere Technical, winning on
fewest misses. Next were DelRhea Godwin, MD Glen Burnie;
Deirdre Mullen, NJ Notre Dame; Cheryl Burdick, NJ Ramsey; and
Jennifer Nelms, PA Spotsylvania. |
| Samantha Shepard wins PV - Massachusetts wunderkind
Samantha Shepard, a freshman from MA Weston, easily won the girls pole vault
at 12-2 as Michelle Kercado, NY Monroe-Woodbury, gimpy with a sore ankle, no
heighted. Another Massachusetts freshman Molly Lederman, MA New
Jewish, PR's twice to finish second at 11-6, giving Jeff Robbins' Air Time
club the top two places. |
| Jamaican girls sweep LJ, TJ - Outstanding jumps by
Elva Goulbourne, JAM Dinthill Technical (21-0) and Shelly-Ann Gallimore, JAM
Meadowbrook (41-9.75) gave Jamaica a sweep of the horizontal jumps.
Goulbourne's leap would have won the college competition today, and it
earned her the award as outstanding female high school athlete in individual
events. Three more
girls were over 19' in long jump: Pun Chittchang, MD South Carroll
(19-8.25); Lynn Harris, DE Christiana (19-5.5); and Jessica DeFrietas, MD E.
Roosevelt (19-3.5). Runner-up in TJ was 1998 USL Yolanda Thompson, VA
(40-8.25), followed by 1998 National Scholastic Outdoor champion Jodi
Schlesinger, NY Clarkstown South, who managed 39-5.25 despite ailing with a
virus. |
| Jamaica claims 3 spots in girls 4x100 championship
finals, including the top two - Two Jamaican teams
in the small school division (less than 525 girls) were the fastest
teams in girls 4x100 qualifying heats. JAM Vere Tech ran 46.39
and JAM St. Jago ran 46.54 to claim the top seeds for the championship final
Friday. The next three fastest winners of 29 qualifying heats were in
the large school division: VA Bethel 47.24, PA Simon Gratz 47.41, and
PA Truman 47.47. (Thursday afternoon) |
| Jill Laurendeau's 2:12 anchor leads Manchester Central
to top 4x800 qualifying time. - NH Manchester
Central girls ran 9:15.62 for the fastest time of four heats, as Jill
Laurendeau turned a close race into a rout with a 2:12.7 anchor split.
Defending champion JAM Holmwood Technical won their heat in 9:17.55.
JAM Vere Tech was disqualified for running inside the wooden curb on the
last leg, letting PA Conestoga win that heat in 9:20.40. The fourth
heat winner was PA William Penn (9:17.18). Next fastest of 12
qualifiers for the championship race at 12:25 pm Friday were VA Thomas
Jefferson (9:21.70) and PA Upper Darby (9:21.74). (Thursday morning) |
| Sheena Johnson defends 400H title: Sheena
Johnson, VA Gar-Field, defended her title in the 400 meter hurdles with a
stretch run victory over Jamillah Wade, PA Simon Gratz, in 59.19. Wade
led the entire race until the last hurdle. Johnson, who had been
running third to then, surged over the last hurdle to the lead and sprinted
to the finish line a clear winner. Patricia Hall, JAM Vere Tech, also
edged Wade for second, 59.55 to 60.38. (Thursday morning) |
