Mobile Meet of Champions

It was, perhaps, the greatest prep track and field meet the Mobile, Alabama area has ever seen. Over 100 state championships and 15 High School All-Americans were represented in Saturday's Invitational Division of the Dannon Yogurt-Winn Dixie Meet of Champions.   Seventeen meet records were broken at St. Paul's E.E. Dulaney Stadium. The two headliners--Riviera Beach Suncoast's Erica Whipple and Owensboro, Ky's Casey Combest performed to expectations--with Whipple running a blazing anchor leg on the 400-meter relay, and setting meet records in the 100 (10.94 seconds) and 22.93 in the 200, and Combest besting the 100-meter field with a 10.06 hand clocking.

Whipple and East Point GA Tri-Cities’ Emery Bell were selected as the meet’s outstanding performers.

The meet was held starting in the afternoon under slightly overcast skies, with a temperature of 74 degrees. All races were hand timed with video recording for placement verification due to failure of the automatic timing system and backup. Two watches were kept on first places. Times reported are raw without rounding or adjustment. All times in 100 and 200 were compared to video and judged credible based on agreement between times and finishing spacing. Wind was negligible for the sprint and field events (see individual events).

Many Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and North Carolina teams combine this increasingly prestigious meet with a spring break trip to the Gulf Coast beaches. The combination of these with strong Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama teams has always made for superb sport. The athletes have continually described it as a low pressure meet with high caliber competition and they frequently are challenged to peak performances.

The meet was electric. When the 100M boys lined up with Casey Combest
and Mobile's own Torian Stabler (AL 6A 100M & 200M state champ) a hush fell over the crowd of 1500 that I can only compare to being at the Masters in Augusta when they are putting for the championship. The hush burbled once during a false start, but became even quieter as they reset. The starter's gun went off and it all broke loose.

I was timing at the finish and the wall of athletes coming at us was awesome. Combest led the field by two meters with the others nibbling away at his advantage. His controlled form and impeccable mechanics stood out in the mass of violent motion. His time of 10.06 was a valid one. We had two watches on the first place and the other times supported it when we went to video tape to verify places. Everybody in the stadium had their jaws hanging down. Remember, this was within 10 minutes
of Erica Whipple running a 10.94.
