Potomac Puts It All Together

NORFOLK, June 5 – What a difference a day makes for the Potomac High boys track and field team.

After sinking to 12th place at the Virginia AAA track and field championships Friday, the Dumfries school rebounded to dominate the sprint races and score 51 of its 57.5 total points today, enabling it to capture its first outdoor state title.

Eight-time All-Met senior Michael Newell won the 100 meters and anchored the 4x100 relay that broke a 14-year-old meet record with a winning time of 41.36 seconds. Newell failed to make the finals in Friday's long jump, an event he had placed second the past two years.

But Potomac's biggest victory came in the 200, when junior Rico Lloyd, running in Lane 7, held off Centreville junior All-Met Rickey Harris to win in 21.87 seconds.

"It seems like we never can put a whole meet together," Lloyd said. "When we have a bad field event day, our running always picks it up, like in indoor," when the Panthers came back to win the state title after a disappointing first day.

Harris, The Post's male athlete of the year, won the 100 hurdles and the 400 before finishing second to Lloyd in the 200. Centreville placed second to Potomac in the team standings as well with 51 points. Hylton, behind senior All-Met Boyd Ouden's victory in the 300 hurdles and senior Tim Ramsey's second-place finish in the 400, placed third with 46 points.

In the girls events, Bethel of Hampton won the team title for the second straight year with 76 points. Gar-Field, the indoor state champion, finished second (51 points) behind senior All-Met female athlete of the year Sheena Johnson. Johnson won the 100 and 300 hurdles despite re-injuring her left ankle and placed second in the triple jump.

The West Potomac girls placed third overall as All-Met senior Yolanda Thompson became only the sixth girl in Virginia high school track history and the first since 1994 to win six career individual outdoor titles. She captured the triple jump today by more than a foot with a winning leap of 40 feet 6.25 inches. Thompson also won Friday's long jump by nine inches.
