California Notes
Doug Speck and correspondents around the state 'Tis the time of the season (when the weather heats up and track and field athletes begin to really, really improve)---- In the last week---

--Alejandra Barrientos (San Lorenzo Valley, Felton) continues to amaze, racing 10:25.8 for 3200 meters in the Kearney Invitational at Hartnell College on April 17th. Second place was 12:45 with the new sophomore star hot off her 4:47 1600 at Arcadia the week before showing impressive range. Four high- schoolers in the nation ran faster than the 10:25.8 in all of 1998 outdoors.

--Jenna Johnson (St. Joseph, Santa Maria) junior improved out to 44-08 in the Shot Put to mark the eleventh grader as one of the elite throwers in the nation. The 44-08 mark would have put Jenna as one of the top thirty throwers in the nation for the season last year. With most of the outdoor season there is always time for improvement.

--Lucais MacKay (Hughson) traveled down to Antelope Valley Community College on the way to the Mt. SAC Invitational, finally improving out to over 200 feet, with a 201-07 effort to move to the number two position nationally behind New Jersey's Terrance Glover, who has tossed the implement out to 202-01 a week ago.

--Annmarie Turpin (Simi Valley) improved her best in the High Jump with a 5-10 effort last week in a dual meet. Turpin has had a fine fall, with a number of 5-08 jumps, and she is also an accomplished hurdler and horizontal jumper.

--Jon Cooper (Palo Verde, Blythe) continues to improve in the lower desert area of California, racing 14.2 in the High Hurdles in the mid-March Central Relays in El Centro.
