Trabuco Hills Invitational
Mission Viejo - Sat 4/3/99

There were some solid performances in this Orange County affair at
Trabuco Hills High School. The meet was described in a story in the Orange County Register as sprints run "into the wind" - strange day in Southern California - blustery and cool - assume wind legal.

Dave Osterman in the Orange County Register mentioned that Ashley Bethel, older sister of Dana (fine meet date summarized below) has torn an anterior cruciate knee ligament and is not competing this year for Louisiana State University, where she went to college.

Covina Invitational -
Azusa Pacific University -
Sat 4/3/99

How many Boys team titles are won by a team that has predominantly
distance runners? Well, it happened here with the Don Lugo (Chino) group
dominating the 800-1600 and 3200 to take the team title. Covina's Sam
Boswell appeared in the vault here at 15-00, with super soph Shakhan Lewis,
undoubtedly looking forward to next weekend's Arcadia Invitational for her first big test against the nation's best (she has run 11.97 this year) taking the Girls 100 at 12.13. Laura Chen (Temple City) had a fine 11-06 Vault.

Bob Mathias Fresno Relays -

Thur 4/1 Small Schools Division
Check closely the following results for the performances of Joe Vasquez
of Selma. While the 100 seems definitely affected by wind, anything within a
half a second of that plus his discus performance would qualify him as one of the great all-around athletes in the state.
With discussion at the State level of a "two-division" state meet, with the state's schools probably breaking off somewhere within a hundred or two of 1000 it is fun to look at the following results and see how many athletes of
this size school would have so much a more positive experience with our sport
should they be able to move on to a state meet with schools of thier size.
It is done in about every other part of the country, with two divisions
certainly not totally diluting the competition, one line of reasoning used against
such a change. With well over a thousand high schools in the state and at least
three-quarters of them having track squads you should see how people around
the country roll their eyes when they comprehend that everyone is in one
division at state.

MUIR GIRLS LOSE FIRST MEET IN 16 YEARS! Crescenta Valley, a hard-knocking
overall team in the Pacific League has come close a couple of times in the
last few years, but finally pulled off a dual win over Pasadena Muir on Tuesday,
March 30th, to hand the Mustangs their first dual meet loss since 1983! The
Muir tradition, started under Coach Jim Brownfield back in the 80's is
certainly a stellar one, marked by a couple of national relay records (4x400
and shuttle hurdles) with stars such as Inger Miller. It must be noted that
a quite impressive standard of excellence has been achieved when a loss to a
program rates far more news than the nearly twenty year string of wins in
the program. Coach Mike Knowles has a good group of young athletes at Muir with we are sure a new streak to start next week!
