California 19995/3 Monday morning reportby Doug Speck
BIG DUAL MEET Can a High School Girls' track team run 11.8 (100m), 25.6 (200m) 55.0 (400m), 2:17.2 (800m) and 5:29.3 (1600m), 14.2 (100mH), 42.3 (300mH), and a 47.2 (400m Re) and lose a dual meet? Only in the meets between Long Beach Poly and Long Beach Wilson now a days can a squad race those times, as Long Beach Wilson did on April 29th, and still lose a dual meet. With monster teams at both schools who compete desperately all the way up through the State Championship level for wins, each time these two groups come together it is World War III. On April 29th at the Long Beach Poly oval, with most facilities most certainly running a bit quicker (we're talking dirt here), Poly swept the Boys and Girls meets 78-49 on the female side, with the Poly Boys' group scoring a 93-20 win over Wilson. Lashinda Demus edged Detra King in the 300 Lows in 42.3, with Joni Smith's 55.0 probably joining Lashinda as the fastest dual meet high school times ever run in the nation! Darrell Rideaux was 10.5 in the 100m to lead the Poly male squad to its big win. The groups come together this week at Long Beach City College on Friday evening for another rocking affair, the Moore League Meet on an all-weather surface!!! With three out of the League guaranteed, there will be some slightly competitive events. The Southern Section has made allowances for those who run very quick in League Meets to move on to the Section competition, with the Moore League on that has been cheated out of potential Section and possible State Meet qualifiers in the past with no flexibility in entries after League. LAUREN FLESHMAN(CANYON, CANYON COUNTRY) BIG 1500!!! Competing in open competition to be in a race where the pace is taken out quickly, Lauren Fleshman (Canyon, Canyon Country), the nation's quickest 3200m runner off her 10:21 run at Arcadia, moved down to the 1500m competing "unattached" at the Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine with some good results. Finishing second behind Darcy Lange's 4:22.15, Fleshman raced a 1999 National Prep leading 4:27.73! Coach Dave DeLong commented a week ago that he wanted to have Lauren race in an event where she was dragged out on a tough pace. It will be some State Meet in June with athletes such as Alejandra Barrientos (4:47.94 for 1600m at Arcadia with a big kick that included a 65 second final 400 and 31 final 200) and Sara Bei (National Scholastic Indoor Champ over Mile and 2 Mile) who last year took the State 1600 and 3200 titles outdoors! Fleshman, Stanford bound, has talked of tripling up through the Section Divisional meet May 23rd, before dropping to one event. GREAT PREP HAMMEREFFORTS Shannon Daniels (Unattached, Upland HS) was 155-07 (3rd) in the Steve Scott Meet in the Hammer, with Stephanie Sampson (Unattached, Esperanza HS) 146-04 (7th) close behind, for two o the better prep hammer efforts in the nation in prep history. Only six prep athletes threw farther than Daniels' 155-07 last year as high-schoolers, with one other ahead of Sampson's effort! ---------------------------------------------- GOOD DUAL EFFORTS FROM SULTANA (HESPERIA) Girls: PV - Debbie Fulwood (Jr) 11-00 4/15 dual DT - Syreeta Waller (Sr) 131-08 4/22 dual Jonna Mahr (Jr) 119-08 4/15 dual EARLY MARKS FROM 4/30/99 NEVADA UNION INVITATIONAL- SAC JOAQUIN SECTION Yur Shallan and Jerry Coleman Jimia White (Casa Roble, Orangevale) 18-08 LJ (wind calm) Chloe Jarvis (St. Francis, Sacramento) nipped Lindsey Hyatt (Placer, Auburn) 56.19-56.49.
