Ventura County Championship

Josh Spiker (Ventura) was the star of a good Ventura County  

Championships on a chilly Friday evening, April 30th at Royal HS  in Simi Valley on their 

fine all-weather facility. 

Spiker, a  Foot Locker National Cross-Country finalist, was given orders by  Coach Bill Tokar to take the 3200 here out at 4:30 and 

see what  happened.  A 4:28.5 opening 1600 had the crowd into the race,  with a 

couple o the final laps at just over 70 seconds on the way  to a 9:08.48 win, 

the state's best 1999 clocking that was totally  solo from the gun!  With the 

bleached blond look now a days, Josh  was very impressive!! 

     There are a number of fine athletes in the area this year.   Annmarie 

Turpin (Simi Valley) took the High Jump (5-6), 400  (58.12), 300m Hurdles 

(45.79), and was second in the Long Jump  (17-05).  Oliver Jackson (Royal) 

took the Long Jump (23-11.5) and  300 Intermediates (39.10).  

Porchea Carroll (Rio Mesa) took a  sprint double (12.32 and 25.06) and the 

Long Jump (18-00.5), with  Will Svitek (Newbury Park) (56-10 SP) and 

Tim Adrian (Moorpark)  (182-10 DT) good weight efforts.  

     The sprints were run into the wind, with cross-winds making the 

horizontal jumps wind-legal.  

     The meet is a great example of area cooperation.  Each  school in the 

County (around twenty in total) has their staff  take on one event 

responsibility or meet management area, with  the entire affair moving along 

in very smooth style from start to  finish!  There is an open session during the 

afternoon, with the  Invitational events filling a couple of hour slot in the 

evening.

Reedley Invitational - 4/30/99

This Central Section Meet featured a couple of state leading  efforts.  

The 

saga of Gabriel Zarate, who has leaped as high as  7-02 during his prep 

career 

but never made it to the state meet,  continues, as his transfer from Selma 

(yikes!!! he would have  made them one of the best small school teams in 

state 

history had  he stayed there) to Parlier was contested.  He was declared  

ineligible three weeks ago, then eligible under special  circumstances this 

week.  He celebrated with a 6-11.25 clearance,  with hopes that this talented 

young athlete will make it to state  once at least during his high school 

career.      

     The Carano twins, Kevin (48-10) and Kyle (48-07) moved back  atop the 

State 

listings in the Triple Jump with their efforts  here.
