HIGH JUMP BESTS - JULIE STEVENSON (Diamond Bar) 5-10 best in a 4/7 dual at
Walnut HS in dual against Ayala (Chino Hills). PAT ELFELT (Diamond Bar)
6-08.5 in dual 4/21 dual at Walnut HS). Reported by Jeff Allen, who added that
Stevenson severly inflamed a heel during warm-ups at the Arcadia
Invitational and will not compete again until League Finals and CIF. Julie is
headed for UCLA.
SUPER SHOT PUT DUO - Coach Bruce Makinson (Shasta, Redding) asks the last
time when one California High School had two Male Shot Putters over 59 feet in
one year. With Dan Husten (61-00) and Josh Robb out in that territory this
Spring, it appears the 1994 duo of Wade Tift (61-06) and Stephen Gonzales (58-01) of
Newport Harbor (Newport Beach) were the other top duo in that event in the
last decade, unless someone can come up with a better twosome from the same
school.
MT CARMEL (SAN DIEGO INVITE) SOME TOP MARKS LED BY MONIQUE HENDERSON 54.91
400M AND 24.20 200M
Without full results at this time, it appears the 4/24 Mt. Carmel
Invite in San Diego was a fine one. Morse of San Diego's Monique Henderson topped
the action with a 24.20 (200m wind +0.86) and 54.91 (400m) double. Preston

(Rancho Verde, Moreno Valley), the Arcadia Open Champ at 6-06 in the High
Jump,
improved to 6-10 here. Covina's Sam Boswell took the Pole Vault at 15-02,
with
Tiffany Jones (Eisenhower, Rialto) 18-04.5 in the Long Jump. Bernard Grady
(Scripps Ranch, SD) marked a win over Joe Weber (Pacific, San Bernardino) in
the Shot Put with a 59- 00.75 best. Full results in a day or two!
DEE SCOTT (SOUTH BAKERSFIELD) HEADSLINES KERN RELAYS
Recently signed at Cal State Northridge, and nursing injured ligaments
in an ankle that has held her out of the horizontal jumps, South Bakersfield's
Dee Scott raced 14.6 to win the Kern Relays 100m Hurdles over Tehachapi's Mandy
Ruziecki. Ridgeview's Rodney Leisle had seasonal bests in the Shot Put
(58-11)and Discus (171-05). Tiffany Bennett (Centennial, Bak) took the Girls 100
in 12.0, with Jenna Lazzerini (Garces, Bak) 5-05 to win the High Jump.
Foothill (Bak) took the Girls 400m Relay in 48.7 to nip South (Bak) 48.8. Rachel
Varner (Bakersfield) nipped more famous teammate April Burton in the Shot Put with
a 40-05.5 win. Brandon Matlock (Stockdale, Bak), a junior, followed his 48.45
400 Friday evening at the Sanger Metric Meet with a 10.6 100m win here.
LOWER DESERT SHOW-DOWN
Palo Verde (Blythe) hurdler JON COOPER, who had been down to 14.2
already this spring, was injured in a dual against Brawley, with GABE LEE (Brawley)
racing ahead to a 14.8 winning clocking in an Imperial Valley League dual
4/22 at Palo Verde HS. HANK BEHRENS (Yucca Valley) broke his old school record
in the Shot Put on the same day for the third time this year, powering the 12
pound ball out to 54-04.5.

CARPINTERIA TAKES SANTA BARBARA COUNTY MEET ON BOYS' SIDE, ST. JOSEPH (SANTA
MARIA) WINS GIRLS CONTEST.
As quoted by John Zant in the Santa Barbara News-Press, Carpinteria, a
school with one-seventh of its student body out for track (!!! 800 students
in school in latest Southern Section Directory with means 110-120 on the track
team!), and forced to practice this year in the school parking lot while the
school's great stadium featuring an all- weather running facility is being
finished, took the Boys' side of the Santa Barbara County Meet 4/25 at Dos
Pueblos HS in Goleta.
