REGINA JACOBS, QUEEN OF U.S. DISTANCE RUNNING,
ENTERS SAN DIEGO INDOOR GAMES MILE

Three-times Olympian and American 5000 meters record holder Regina
Jacobs has signed to compete in the women's mile at the San Diego Indoor
Games presented by ULTIMA, Saturday, January 23, at the San Diego
Sports Arena.

Jacobs, Runner's World American Female Runner of the Year, is
regarded by many as the best U.S. female distance runner of the post-Mary
Decker Slaney era. And despite a long career that spans two decades, the
35-year old Stanford graduate-like good wine-is getting better with age. On
July 4 this past summer Jacobs set a new American record in the 5000 meters
with a time 14 minutes 52.49 seconds at a meet in Brunswick, Maine.

Jacobs, ranked the top American runner in eight different events
the past four years-including top rankings in the 3000 and 5000 last year-
is clearly the most versatile U.S. distance runner of the moment. She
started her career as a 800 runner and broke the 2-minute barrier in 1987
(1:59.36). She moved up to 1500 and clocked a 4:00.46 PR in 1988, and a
4:22.20 mile in 1996. She improved to 8:39.56 in the 3000 meters last year,
the 4th fastest US time in history. And her 5000 record, in only the second
year of running the event, is just a sign of things to come.

Jacobs competed in three Olympics in the 1500, reaching the final
(10th) in Atlanta. The metric mile also brought Regina the biggest
accomplishment of her career - a second place at the 1997 World
Championships in Athens.

ULTIMA, a leading provider of sports fluid replacement beverages
for athletes, will be the presenting sponsor of the 1999 San Diego Indoor
Games. Time-Warner Cable TV is the meet's media partner.

High school events at the San Diego Indoor Games get under way at
11 a.m., with the Invitational at 6:30 p.m.
