PATRIOTS, HOYAS TO HOST
COLLEGIATE TRACK AND FIELD INVITATIONAL

FAIRFAX, VA ... December 16, 1998 ... Six of the finest collegiate
track and field teams will gather in Fairfax, VA, on Fri.-Sat., Jan.
29-30, 1999, for what promises to be one of the best indoor track meets of the season.

George Mason University and Georgetown University are the co-hosts of the inaugural Patriot-Hoya Coalition Indoor Track Meet and will also  include Arkansas, North Carolina, Stanford and Wisconsin. The meet is the culmination of the efforts of George Mason head womens coach Norm Gordon and Georgetown head mens and womens coach Frank Gagliano.

"Frank and I talked last spring about bringing a premier indoor track meet back to the area," Gordon said. "Once the idea took hold, we decided to bring in the best college teams we could. Frank was instrumental in getting some schools to make a commitment and the athletic administrations of both of our schools were very supportive of the concept."

The meet will be held at the George Mason Fieldhouse, home to one of the fastest flat 200-meter tracks in the country. Competitions will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Fri., Jan. 29, and from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 30.

Georgetown and George Mason have dominated Eastern track and field during the past decade, producing over 100 All-Americans combined. The visiting schools more than match those credentials. Arkansas has won over 20 national team championships while Stanford has established itself as a distance power, winning two recent NCAA cross country titles. Perennial top 10 finishers North Carolina and Wisconsin complete the outstanding field.

There will be well over 50 All-American athletes competing, Gordon noted. It will be a great opportunity for track fans and high school athletes to see many of the NCAAs best, and likely many future Olympians.

Tickets, good for both days, are priced at $5 for adults and $2 for youth aged 18 and under and seniors 62 and over. George Mason students will be admitted for free with ID.

Tickets go on sale on Mon., Jan. 4, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the George Mason Ticket Office (703-993-3270). Visa or Mastercard purchases may be made by phone.
