TRACK'S ELITE GATHERS FOR 39TH L.A. INVITATIONAL

USATF Indoor Series Brings Stars, Luster to Venerable Meet

Maurice Greene, the "World's Fastest Human," and Dan O'Brien, the
"World's Greatest Athlete," headline the strongest field assembled in at
least a decade for the 39th annual Los Angeles Invitational indoor track
meet, Saturday, February 13, at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

The L.A. Invitational is part of a nationally televised four-meet
U.S.A. Track and Field series in February dubbed The Golden Spike Tour.
The Federation is funding 40 elite athletes for these four nationally
televised meets, including the Los Angeles stop, the second of the circuit
following this Friday's Millrose Games in New York. The circuit is
sponsored by adidas, Ultima replenisher and Visa. Local sponsors include
the Amateur Athletic Foundation of L.A., Daily News, Reno Air, ARCO am/pm
and AMC Theaters.

Greene earned the title of "World's Fastest Human" by winning the
100 meters at the 1997 World Championships in Athens. The 24-year-old
protg of sprint guru John Smith was ranked number one in the world for
1998 by Track and Field News magazine. Greene has a 9.86 lifetime best in
the 100 and holds the indoor world record for 60 meters at 6.39. He will
compete in the 50 meters at the L.A. Invitational against a strong field
that includes Olympian and training partner Jon Drummond and 1998 national
champ Tim Harden.

O'Brien, perhaps the greatest decathlete in history, won the gold
medal at the 1996 Olympics, along with three World Championship titles. He
holds the world mark with 8891 points and eyes the "impossible" 9000-point
limit. O'Brien will compete in the 55-meter hurdles against Olympic silver
medalist Mark Crear, the world's number one ranked high hurdler in 1988,
and sensational newcomer Reggie Torian, the 1998 national champion.
The 10 events which are part of the circuit are loaded with talent.
Among the headliners:

Jeff Hartwig, Lawrence Johnson and Pat Manson in the pole vault.
Hartwig, the U.S. record holder at 19-8 1/2, opened the indoor season with
a U.S. indoor mark of 19-4 3/4 in Reno. Johnson (19-7 1/2 PR) cleared 19-0
1/2 in his first meet of the year in San Diego.

The women's 50 dash pits Inger Miller against Chryste Gaines,
ranked 3rd and 4th in the world, respectively, last year. Both were members
of the 1996 gold medal winning 4x100 U.S. Olympic relay team.

The women's hurdles will showcase Melissa Morrison, Angie Vaughn
and Cheryl Dickey, three of the hottest runners in the world. Morrison ran
the 100 hurdles in 12.53 and was ranked third in the world. Vaughn clocked
12.63 and was ranked fourth. Dickey, ranked 10th, ran 12.72, but won the
national title.

Tisha Waller , the world's second-ranked high jumper, who cleared
6-7 last year, leads the entries in her specialty. Terrence Harrington,
Richie Boulet, Jason Pyrah, Jamey Harris and Rich Kenah guarantee a very
competitive men's mile, and Tyree Washington, member of the US 4x400 relay
team that set a new world record at last summer's Goodwill Games (2:54.20),
will face a tough challenge from Olympic 400 hurdles champion Derrick
Adkins in the 500 yards.

The always popular high school portion of the meet starts at 11
a.m., with the Invitational at 5:15 p.m. Tickets are priced at $23
(reserved seats) and $10, general admission, and are available at the
Sports Arena box office, 3939 South Figueroa St., (213) 748-6131 and Ticketmaster outlets. For meet information visit the web site at
