Netters:

        On a chilly, but rainless day at Holmdel County Park yesterday,

Christian brothers Academy and Morristown set up a classic duel for the

all-group championhips to be held there Nov. 22.

        CBA ran as it has all season, moving out cautiously from the gun

and running through the field from the one to two-mile to win its third

straight Parochial A title and 13th in the last 22 years. The team average

of 16:56 was easily the best of the day, but there was a catch.

        For earlier in the day, Morristown had averaged 16:46 with its

first fourfinishers, only to have its usual 5th man Adam Wilson run into

asthma problems and finish as 7th man in 87th place at 19:04. Jeff carman,

a 400M runner and spring baseball player was the 5th man across for the

Colonials in 69th polace at 18:39.

        In an ironic touch, finishing 4th in the race was Ryan Smith of

Hightstown in 16:42. His Morristown namesake, a 3:55 1500M runner, was

acting as manager for the day, nursing a stress fracture in his hop which

has sidelined him at least until mid-December. But it gave an easy way to

see whaty Morristown might have run but the that injury.

        The AG race thus shapes up this way: CBA cannot count on another

failure by Wilson and so will probably go out a bit faster to stay with the

Moristown 2 through 4 men. Morristown leader Tom DelSordo will be running,

as usual, with the race leaders. The Colts have six in their top group;

soph Brian Kerwin finished 15th as 6th man Saturday in 17:19. The probably

3-4 finishers are Cherokee and Randolph, who finished 1-2 yesterday in the

Gr, IV race,

        Steve Slattery of Mt. Olive, the defending AG champion, confirmed

his role as AG favorite as he won the Gr. III race in 16:03, another of his

countless victories over good friend DelSordo (The two spent much of the

time waiting for the race, discussing the Nov. 29 Northeast Footlocker

Trials and, in particular, the exploits of national defender Abririzak

Mohamud of Boston English.)

        There was a major surprise in the gr. IV race as junior Jon Fasulo

of Hunterdon Central outran favored Murad Campbell of Overbrook by 150

yards to win in 16:06. Campbell barely held off Gordon Kaslusky of

Westfield for 2nd. Two other strong wins, both at 16:25, came from Matt Day

of Pope John in Parochial A and Ian Hahn of Manchester in Gr. II. NJ will

definitely have a strong entry at the Footlocker Regionals, battling

Massachusetts for the state team title.

        Now for a look at each of the boys races with the top finishers:



                                Gr. IV

        It was a surprise to the chilled spectators in this 2nd boys' race

of the 12-event program when the black and red clad Fasulo emerged from the

Hills with such a large lead over Campbell. It avenged his only NJ loss of

the season to Campbell on this same course at the Shores Coaches meet in

early October. He is definitely a Div. I prospect.

        The team battle was a threeway affair, pitting Randolph against the

brother schools from Burlington Cty, Cherokee and Shawnee. Cherokee had

been a disappointent in '96, but two underclassmen, Aaron Boucher in 20th

and soph Joe Halin in 23rd, made the difference this time in an 87-101 win

over Randolph, which was hurt by the 21st place finish (2nd on the team) of

its usual leader, Andrew Adams. Shawnee finished with 107.

                        Group III

        Slattery left DelSordo after the two-mile mark as usual and had an

80-yard margin at the finish. It was obviously not an all-out effort in the

cold weather; that will awit the AG and Footlocker races. Cary Snyder of

Demarest, in his first outing at Holmdel this year, took the third from

Smith with Kian Messkoub and Justin Frenzel claimed the next two places for

Morristown.

        The Colonials seemed to have things wrapped up when junior Scott

McCaffery placed 12th, but then had to sweat out the 5th man. It was still

a comfortable margin over Ocean Twp, 87-122, with Demarest claiming the

third AG slot at 124.

                                Group II

        This was to be a two-man race between Han and Ricky Gibson of team

winner Ridge, but Han made it a runaway, finishing 150 yards ahead. Junior

ray Tomczuk of Delran got the 3rd in a Burlington Cty battle with Bill

Mason of Cinnaminson.

        The team battle was closer than expected. A young Morrie Hills team

(led by three sophomores), got within three points of the all-senior Ridge

team, 89-92.

                        Group I

        This was a rematch of the 1996 individual race, but it came out

differently. This time, it was junior Brian Saliter of Whippany Park, a

lanky basketball player, who was over the line first in 16:48 with Mike

Fulton of Maple Shade 2nd and defender Jeff Clark of Bogota 3rd.

        Fulton got his satisfaction out of the team race which Maple Shade

won easily from Haddonfield, 98-128. Bernards took the 3rd qualifying spot,

just one poiht behind Haddonfield. None of these teams are a threat in the

AG race.

        Day had been outrun a week earlier by Bill Hoffman of CBA at the

NJCTC meet. This time, Hoffman was not even his team's top man and Day ran

away from Austin O'Reilly of Msgr. Donogan by 35 yards. Third went to Todd

Henderson of Notre Dame with junior Geoff Fahey leading CBA in 4th and all

five of the Colts in the top 10.

        The team interest was strictly on who would get the other three AG

qualifying slots (The wiuld card was conceded to this group before the meet

even began). Don Bosco, which had rested its regulars at the NJCTC meet,

outran Paul VI for 2nd, 103-108, and St. Joseph's of Metuchen edged

Delbarton for the crusual 4th spot, 137-143.

                        Parochial B

        Thanks to a number of factors (new association members, a different

system of deciding who is A and who is B, this race is now something like

the old C division which was abandoned almost 20 years ago. But it makes

for good team competition with four teams finishing within 15 points here.

Mater Dei, which had kept pretty much to Shore races all year, opped up as

the surprise winner, 63-66, over Wildwood Catholic with Pingry taking 3rd

from Oratory, 69-77.

        The individual race was a good one with Tim Callinan of Sacred

Heart defeating defender Rob Dobson of Mater Dei by 30 yards in 16:58.

(Sacred Heart also had 1996 runner-up Kevin Sacco 7th, but did not field a

team.) Jutsin Manly and Andy Gruel went 3-4 to give Pingry its winning edge

over Oratory.
