USATF JUNIOR OLYMPIC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

                   BLUE LAKE PARK, PORTLAND, OREGON

                         SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13th, 1997

Over 2,500 kids converged on Portland Oregon last weekend for the USATF

Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships.  They had the unforgettable

experience of running the same course (with fresh sand and wood chip

patches to cover the numerous rough spots) in nearly the same weather

conditions as that the Men and Women had faced a week earlier here at

Blue Lake Park.  While there was no freezing rain, the wind was

unmercifully relentless.  Gusts appeared to knock several of the

littlest ones in the 10 and younger race off their stride and feet.

While it was brutal conditions for racing, excellent racing was seen.

Still, IMHO, hanging is too painless a sentence for a race director who

would knowledgable schedule a championship competition in an arena where,

historically, weather plays as big as or bigger a role than the ability

of the competitors.  I have great respect for the couple thousand or so

spectators that constantly lined the course to cheer on their sons and

daughters, brothers and sisters, friends, and those kids who needed the

encouragement just to finish.

USATF also needs to make sure (during the bidding process or at least

during the site review) that a facility big enough for the opening and

awards ceremonies has been arranged for.   While the convention center

next to the Holiday Inn might be big enough to handle the crowd for any

other XC meet, it was a fire hazard with all the people cramed arround

the entrances with noplace to sit inside for the JO Nationals.

oh my god, did I just say we had a problem with too many people at a

cross country meet!!!!   Hey, even the Portland "OREGONIAN" newspaper

even had a (small) article on the meet.  And, even with races of over

300 finishers, the finish line and results were handled quickly and

correctly. Perhaps a reprieve should be granted to Harry for his course

selection.

With so many high schoolers once again doing junior olympics XC, many

inaddition to the foot locker local meets, National Sponsors who are

big into XC, like Reebok and Runners World, should sit up and take

notice of this gold mine of an opportunity.  Several of the 10 races

had over 300 runners and over 25 teams competing.

Michigan once again had the top club in country (last year it was the

sunset striders).  With the dominance of the boys division of footlocker

by the midwest with 5 amoung the top 13 (mostly juniors) and here at

the Junior Olympics, look for the midwest to dominate footlocker for

years to come.
