Lancer Invitational
KEMPTOWN MD 9/13/97 -- Dulaney girls, Westminster boys, Randy Buzzell, and Greg Vincent were winners in the
19-team Lancer Invitational at the 3-mile Kemptown Park course on a sunny early autumn day. Dulaney shaded the
host Linganore girls 104 to 122, while Westminster topped a tight pack of boys teams with 89 points.
A stirring girls race was won by Middletown freshman Buzzell in course record 19:01.2 over Robyn Ritter (Sherando),
Renee Berry (Seneca Valley), and Jennifer Ford (TJ). The top four set themselves apart early, but when they came
out of the woods for the last 500 meters, it was down to Buzzell and Ritter, a stride apart. Buzzell then pulled
steadily away to win by 9 seconds. The old record of 19:04 was set by Jackie Hayes of Linganore, who went on to
run for the Naval Academy.
In the boys race, Dulaney's Vincent was a 12 second winner over Clear Spring's Tim Mason, who took his first loss
of the season after two victories.
