CLEAR SPRING, MD, 9/6/97 -- Middletown freshman Randy Buzzell made a smashing debut on the high school stage with a 19.02.9 victory over veterans Kari McCarty (North Hagerstown) and Jennifer Ford (Thomas Johnson) on the 3-mile Clear Spring High School course. But Linganore packed five girls in the top 13 to win the Varsity Girls - Large Schools team race over Middletown, which nipped Gettysburg by one point. Buzzell and McCarty ran in lock step until the last quarter mile, when Buzzell pulled steadily away to win by 7 seconds. Ford, last year's Maryland class 3A champion, trailed by another 24 seconds.

Tim Mason (Clear Spring) enjoyed his home course in 16:19.2, the best boys time of the day, to win the Varsity Boys - Small Schools in a romp. Boonsboro won the team race.

North Hagerstown won the Varsity Boys - Large School race in a close battle over Linganore and Middletown as the first and third runners were disqualified for uniform violations. Mike Lum led the Hub team in 16:54.6, good for an official second behind Mike Prada of River Hill's 16:43.8.

Allegany's Kate Gall led her team to victory in the Varsity Girls - Small Schools in 20:30.3, with Brunswick, Smithsburg, and Boonsboro close behind.
