Howard County Championships
COLUMBIA MD, 10/23/97 - Team play overcame individual brilliance as Wilde Lake's boys and Mt. Hebron's girls won the Howard County high school cross country championships on the 3-mile Howard Community College course. Wilde Lake boys packed scorers from 5 to 12 to overcome 1-2 punches of Atholton and River Hill. Atholton's Mike Zaron (16:19) and Nick Barresi (16:26) and River Hill's Mike Prada (16:35) and Zach Heidepriem (16:47) all crossed the finish line before Wilde Lake's first runner, Ben Coffman (16:50). But Coffman's teammates poured in 7-8-11-12 for a 43-56 win over Atholton. Wilde Lake's non-scoring runners got 15 and 19 to push the opposition further back. The girls race was similar. There was no stopping Suzy McCulloch of Centennial, who was an easy winner in 18:39 over Mt. Hebron's Kate Frande (2nd, 19:07) and got help from Sarah Ordaz (4th) and Neha Amin (8th). But Mt. Hebron split the Centennial team with an 11-12-13-15 pack to win the team score, 53-58.
