ROCKVILLE MD, 10/18/97 - Jarrett Van Tine of Bethesda Chevy Chase and Suzy McCullough of Centennial each finished second as the highest ranking Maryland public school runners in the seeded division of the big Georgetown Prep Invitational cross country meet.
Whitman won the boys team championship, beating Virginia powerhouse Lake Braddock by 2 points. This offers an interesting comparative score for the Maryland state 4A championships. Earlier this season, Westminster beat Lake Braddock by 5 points in the Hereford Bull Invitational, so Westminster and Whitman seem primed for a showdown in the state meet November 8 at Hereford.
Team scoring was revised on October 25 from results originally announced. Here is the explanation from Phil Quinn:
"On consultation with the originator of RUNSCORE, I
figured out the necessary statements that would enable the software
to eliminate the "non complete team runners" from the team scoring,
while leaving them in the the individual scoring. Please note that
we were instructed to score 5, displace 7. Nothing was ever
mentioned about eliminating "non team runners". Also note that there
is no "standard" team scoring procedure. Many road races are scored
by time, not place and the number of scoring competitors vary from
race to race."
