Monocacy Valley Athletic League
WILLIAMSPORT MD, 10/18/97 - Kari McCarty of North Hagerstown won the battle, but Randy Buzzell's Middletown girls team won the war in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League cross country championships over a 3-mile course at Williamsport High School. In boys competition, Francis Scott Key stamped itself a contender for the state 2A title by upsetting North Hagerstown, 41-57. McCarty pulled ahead on a hill after the 2-mile mark to win in 18:26.5, making it two wins apiece versus Buzzell. Buzzell was 24 seconds behind in second, but was one of four freshmen who led Middletown to a team victory, 47-67 over North. Middletown junior Molly Imming was seventh, and freshmen Laura Pumphrey, Jessica Bisnett, and Andrea Pope ran 8-11-20. FSK packed six boys from 2nd to 14th, with all establishing season best times. Ryan Campbell of Walkersville (16:32.1) was a 6 second winner over FSK's Colin Russell for the individual title. Mike Lum of North Hagerstown (16:45.4) was third, followed by Doug Allen of Walkersville (16:49) and Ryan Moore of Middletown (16:51.6).
